DENVER – Six consecutive losses turned to be more than enough for the Edmonton Oilers, who took out their frustrations at the Pepsi Center on Friday night with a 4-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche.
Forward Jordan Eberle, who failed to collect a point during the losing streak, had a goal and two assists against the Avalanche, who had gone 2-0-2 in their previous four games.
The Oilers also received a solid outing from goalie Devan Dubnyk, who made 33 saves and now owns a 7-3-1 career record against the Avalanche.
It's been a rough season for the Oilers, who replaced general manager Steve Tambellini with Craig MacTavish on Monday, but they have had their way with Colorado. Edmonton won four of five games against the Avalanche this season.
Justin Schultz had a goal and an assist in the first period, when the Oilers grabbed a 2-1 lead, and Eberle did the same in the second period as the Oilers increased the advantage to 4-1.
Eberle passed back to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who was skating down the middle, for a shot that beat Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov to the stick side at 5:12 to make it 3-1. The goal came 19 seconds after the Oilers killed off a tripping penalty to Mark Fistric.
Eberle then converted the rebound of Fistric's point shot at 14:13 for his first goal since April 3, when he scored twice in an 8-2 road win against the Calgary Flames.
Schultz broke a 1-1 tie at 14:14 of the first period when he deflected Eberle's shot past Varlamov. Eberle skated with the puck from the left side into the slot, spun around and slipped the puck in front to where Schultz knocked it home.
Taylor Hall opened the scoring at 2:33 – three seconds after the Avalanche killed off a boarding penalty to Gabriel Landeskog. Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick couldn't control a bouncing puck in the goalmouth and it went to Hall, who tucked it inside the right post.
PA Parenteau tied the game at 7:29 with his Avalanche-leading 17th goal. John Mitchell controlled the puck along the right-wing boards and got it to Shane O'Brien, who passed to Parenteau at the base of the left circle for a shot over Dubnyk's left shoulder.
The Avalanche, who is 1-1-1 on its current four-game homestand, will next play the St. Louis Blues on Sunday at Pepsi Center.
