VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -Wojtek Wolski and Marek Svatos scored in a shootout and Peter Budaj made 31 saves in regulation and overtime in the Colorado Avalanche's 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.
Alex Burrows matched Wolski's opening goal in the third round for Vancouver, but Svatos won it with Colorado's final shot, roofing a shot over Roberto Luongo's glove.
Svatos also notched a power-play goal 1:28 into the third period to tie the game and end Luongo's bid for a fourth straight shutout. With the goalie down in a scramble, Svatos whacked a loose puck up and over Luongo, ending his franchise-record shutout streak at 242 minutes, 36 seconds.
Taylor Pyatt scored on a second-period penalty shot for the Canucks, but Budaj, coming off a 1-0 victory in his last start, stopped him and Kyle Wellwood in the shootout as Colorado won its second straight game after losing the previous five.
Luongo finished with 33 saves as the Canucks lost for just the second time in seven games (5-1-1).
Despite having his shutout streak ended, Luongo was the biggest reason the Canucks got to overtime. After killing off a 62-second 5-on-3 power play with five minutes left, Luongo stopped Tyler Arnason's backhander from the slot with two minutes remaining, and slid across the crease to rob Wolski on a one-timer with 1.9 seconds left.
Colorado was missing captain Joe Sakic, who stayed back in Denver because of a sore back but could rejoin the team on its three-game trip through western Canada.
Luongo only needed to blank the Avalanche for 11 minutes, 5 five seconds to pass the franchise - and his own personal - shutout record of 212 minutes, 12 seconds. By then he had already stopped 15 shots, including a sliding stop on Wolski on an early power play, a right-pad save on David Jones on a 3-on-1 rush six minutes in, and stuffing Stastny on a point-blank one-timer from the top of the crease just four seconds before matching the record he set last December.
Pyatt opened the scoring 2:43 into the second after Ruslan Salei broke his stick with a slash on a breakaway. On the ensuing penalty shot, Pyatt put on a fake before snapping a shot past Budaj's glove.
Vancouver had several chances to extend its lead, but couldn't put the puck past Budaj, who got some help from Canucks shooters. After Steve Bernier and Daniel Sedin missed open nets earlier, Mason Raymond and Henrik Sedin shot into a sprawled Budaj with the top of the net open on a third-period power play.
Notes: Svatos' power-play goal was originally credited to Stastny, but the Avalanche was advised Thursday from the NHL that the tally actually belonged to Svatos. ...Vancouver RW Jannik Hansen returned after missing four games because of a groin pull. ... C Pavol Demitra, out since Oct. 19 with fractured rib cartilage, is back at practice and could return Saturday against Toronto. ... Avalanche C Tyler Arnason replaced Sakic after being a healthy scratch the last game. ... Colorado's game in Edmonton Saturday will be its 1,000th since moving to Denver from Quebec in 1995-96.
