DENVER (AP) -Martin Brodeur stopped 24 shots in reaching 40 wins for a record seventh time, Jay Pandolfo added a goal and an assist and the New Jersey Devils snapped Colorado's five-game winning streak at home by beating the Avalanche 4-2 on Saturday.

Dainius Zubrus, Jamie Langenbrunner and John Madden also scored for the Devils, who have won five of six.

Brodeur (40-22-5) turned in one brilliant save after another as he improved to 15-5-6 in his career against Colorado. His best save came early in the third period when he was sprawled on the ice and used the handle portion of his stick to keep a puck from trickling into the net.

He extended his own NHL record by reaching 40 wins again. Brodeur broke the league mark last season by earning 48 victories, and is 18 shy of topping former Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy's career record of 551 wins.

Jose Theodore fell to 4-13 lifetime against New Jersey. He finished with 23 saves.

Paul Stastny and John-Michael Liles scored for Colorado, which went 8-2 against the Eastern Conference this season.

Joe Sakic had an assist on Liles' third-period goal, the 999th of his career. He's one shy of becoming the 11th NHL player to reach 1,000.

After Colorado tied it at 1-1 in the second period on a shot by Stastny, the Devils reclaimed the lead moments later when Pandolfo beat Theodore with a shot just below his left arm. It was Pandolfo's 12th of the season.

Zubrus scored his 11th in the first period when he poked in the puck as it sat under the legs of Theodore. Zubrus has scored in two straight games.

Ryan Smyth was back in the lineup for Colorado after missing six games with a concussion and minor shoulder separation. Smyth was injured when he was checked into the glass partition against Los Angeles.

The injury-riddled Avalanche were without forward Peter Forsberg (groin) as well as defensemen Jordan Leopold (head injury) and Adam Foote (hip).

New Jersey was missing Patrik Elias, the team's second-leading scorer, due to a bruised knee. Elias said he got hurt when he took an 80-mph slap shot to the knee.

"I can't put much weight on it right now," he said as he watched the game from the press box. "But the swelling is down."

Notes: The Avalanche recalled F Wyatt Smith from Lake Erie (AHL). The team sent down D Jeff Jillson. ... The Devils made their first visit to the Mile High City since Nov. 30, 2003. ... Brian Gionta had two assists for the Devils.
