COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -Dan Fritsche's goal with 4:05 left capped a wild six-goal third period in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 5-4 comeback victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.
Colorado, 10-0-0 when leading after two periods entering the game, led 3-1 heading into the third period. The Avalanche also had history on their side, carrying a 22-1-1-1 record in 25 meetings with the Blue Jackets - the most lopsided series in the NHL.
But the Blue Jackets pulled even on Rick Nash's second goal of the night and another by recent minor league recall Joakim Lindstrom midway through the period.
Then in just over a minute the teams combined for three goals.
Columbus' Nikolai Zherdev scored on a low shot from the slot with 5:16 left for a 4-3 lead, but Colorado's Scott Hannan countered off a rebound with 4:35 remaining.
Just 30 seconds later, with the crowd roaring on every play, Jason Chimera's shot was stopped by Colorado goalie Peter Budaj, but Fritsche cleaned up on a backhander.
Kris Beech had three assists, and Curtis Glencross had two for Columbus.
Hannan and Paul Stastny each had a goal and an assist for Colorado, and Ryan Smyth added three assists. Jeff Finger and Wojtek Wolski also scored for the Avalanche.
The Avalanche controlled the first two periods and the first half of the third.
With the score tied at 1 late in the second period, the Avalanche scored twice in 53 seconds.
Stastny was crashing the net when he had a clear shot at the puck with goalie Pascal Leclaire laying flat on his stomach in the crease. Stastny jammed at the puck and it glanced off Leclaire's midsection, creeping across the goal line before Columbus defenseman Adam Foote whisked it away with his stick.
None of the officials signaled a goal. After a video review that lasted several minutes, Stastny was credited with his 11th goal.
Before that goal was announced, the Avalanche made it 3-1 with the teams each a man down.
Smyth was stretched out with his stick at waist level and had his backside in Leclaire's face as Finger's slap shot from the right wing found its way through traffic.
Nash had given Columbus the early lead, pivoting and spinning while whipping the puck past Budaj for his 17th goal.
The Avalanche pulled even on their first power play. Cycling the puck, Brett Clark fed Stastny for a hard slap shot from the top of the left circle, with Leclaire making a kick save. The puck ricocheted to the right dot, where Wolski blistered a one-timer inside the near post for his ninth tally of the year.
Fredrik Norrena came into to replace Leclaire in goal heading into the third period. He gave up the one goal on 11 shots. Budaj faced 31 shots.
