DENVER (AP) -Even after reaching a major milestone, Teemu Selanne was in a sour mood.
Joe Sakic scored in a shootout and the Colorado Avalanche overcame Selanne's 500th career goal to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Wednesday night.
"Getting 500 goals is a great achievement, but it would have been almost a crime to win this game," Selanne said. "The first 30 minutes was the worst hockey I have ever seen in eight years here."
Selanne became the 36th player in NHL history to reach the mark. He joined Jari Kurri as the only Finnish-born NHL players to score 500 goals.
The 36-year-old Selanne sent a wrist shot past Colorado goalie Jose Theodore at 14:54 of the second period. Andy McDonald set up the goal with a cross-ice pass.
"I was kidding him, because I saw him score 76 in his first year in the league," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "So he has really slumped for the other 424."
Dustin Penner also scored for the Ducks and Chris Pronger had two assists. Jean-Sebastian Giguere stopped 41 shots and had his shutout streak snapped at 85 minutes, 44 seconds.
Giguere stopped shots by Paul Stastny and Marek Svatos in the shootout, but the Ducks (15-2-6) failed to capitalize. Theodore denied Selanne, Ryan Shannon and Ryan Getzlaf in the shootout before Sakic's goal.
"We found a way to get to the shootout, and this year we've got a couple of wins with it," Sakic said. "They are the best team in hockey and it was a big win for us."
Sakic froze Giguere and sent a shot between his pads.
"Joe made a great move," Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said. "It didn't even look like he had time to make that move, and he made it."
Tyler Arnason and Brad Richardson scored in regulation for the Avalanche. Theodore made 30 saves to win a rematch of last season's Western Conference semifinal.
Anaheim outshot the Avalanche 12-10 in the third period. Brad Richardson missed an open net at 16:28 of the third for Colorado.
The game was tied 2-all after two periods.
Anaheim managed only seven shots until Theodore was called for tripping at 14:36 of the second. The Ducks capitalized with Selanne and Penner scoring goals 78 seconds apart to tie it.
Selanne got his eighth of the season while Anaheim was on a power play. Theodore then stopped Pronger's shot from the right point, but Penner sent the rebound in from in front of the crease at 16:12.
Colorado outshot the Ducks 16-2 in the first period and led 2-0 on goals by Arnason and Richardson.
Arnason's sixth of the season came at 7:51 when he converted a centering pass from Brett McLean. Richardson's fifth came at 18:01 just as Scott Niedermayer was leaving the penalty box.
"We lost every battle in the first period and we were lucky that it was only 2-0," Selanne said. "We got one point, and we have to move on."
