Hurricanes-Avalanche Preview
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Colorado Avalanche

The Carolina Hurricanes finally got some offense. It didn't help them end their struggles on their road trip.

The Hurricanes (15-12-4) try to avoid matching a season high with their fourth straight loss as they finish out a frustrating four-game western swing against the Colorado Avalanche (13-14-2) on Monday night.

In addition to dropping the first three games on its trip, Carolina has lost its last seven at Denver since a 3-2 victory Feb. 9, 1996. The Hurricanes will need to snap that streak if they want avert their second four-game losing skid of the season - the first coming when they went 0-4 to open 2006-07.

After scoring one total goal in its first two games to open the trip, Carolina took 39 shots but still lost 4-3 in overtime to Vancouver on Friday.

Mike Commodore's third goal of the season with 2:46 left in regulation capped a three-goal, third-period comeback for the Hurricanes. Erik Cole scored his 12th goal earlier in the period for Carolina's first power-play goal in six games.

The Hurricanes lost, though, when Cam Ward couldn't stop a shot from Vancouver's Daniel Sedin on the power play with 1:58 left in overtime.

"The result is disappointing, the effort was not," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "You fight back, you don't get it, but it sets the tone. Hopefully, this can set the tone and we can get a win in the last game here and go back home and play some games and go from there."

Struggling to generate offense, Carolina could be without captain Rod Brind'Amour for a second straight game Monday due to a groin injury. Brind'Amour, who has 10 goals and is one of six Carolina players in double digits in that category, was hurt in a 3-1 loss to Edmonton on Wednesday. He has 10 goals and 20 assists in 34 games against Colorado.

With Brind'Amour hampered by injury, Carolina could use some increased production from leading goal scorer Eric Staal. The Hurricanes' leading scorer last season with 45 goals and 55 assists, Staal has 16 goals this season but hasn't scored in three games.

Staal failed to convert a penalty shot Friday, but did record an assist for his first point of the road trip.

"I thought we fought hard all game again, but the bottom line was we didn't win and that's what we're looking to do," Staal said.

Colorado will be looking to rebound after blowing three leads in a 5-4 loss at Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Avalanche, in last place in the Northwest Division, have dropped three of their last four overall and are 6-7-1 at home.

Even with 37-year-old Pierre Turgeon scoring his first goal in his second game back after missing the first 27 following shoulder surgery, the Avalanche couldn't come out on top against the Kings.

Joe Sakic scored his 12th goal of the season, but Colorado was outshot 31-20 in the final 40 minutes.

"We didn't play 60 minutes like we wanted to," Avalanche center Ian Laperriere said. "You can't go on the road and just expect to win, even if you've got a 2-0 lead. We had a good start, but then we kind of shut it down and they took it to us in the second and the third periods."

Sakic and Turgeon have combined for 51 goals and 125 points in 99 games against the Hurricanes franchise.
