Canucks-Avalanche Preview
Vancouver Canucks vs. Colorado Avalanche

The Vancouver Canucks try to avoid their second three-game losing streak of the season when they visit a Northwest Division rival they have defeated only once on the road in six tries - the Colorado Avalanche.

Vancouver looks to get back on track as it tries to even the season series with Colorado on Saturday.

The Canucks (7-6-1) squandered a two-goal first-period lead Thursday and lost 5-2 to Minnesota. Roberto Luongo allowed a disputed goal that started the comeback, as Minnesota's Todd White deflected a pass into the net with his skate with 15 seconds left in the first period.

The goal was initially waived off, but a review deemed White unintentionally deflected the puck and it stood.

Brian Rolston tied the game on a second-period penalty shot, surprising the Canucks goalie with a quick slap shot from the top of the circles.

"I was out, too, so he just got a piece of it and beat me," Luongo said. "That's the bottom line. Not many guys are going to take a slapper from there. I'll tell you that."

Luongo has allowed eight goals on 48 shots in Vancouver's consecutive losses, including a 3-2 defeat to Nashville on Tuesday.

The Canucks dropped three straight from Oct. 8-13 - a streak that started with a loss to Colorado.

In that meeting, Luongo made 32 saves in a 3-2 defeat. The seven-year veteran is 0-5 with a 3.67 GAA in five starts against the Avalanche (6-5-2).

The Canucks will need their goalie at his best as they to reverse their fortunes at the Pepsi Center. Vancouver is 1-3-1-1 in the last six visits, with the lone victory coming via shootout Jan. 28. The Canucks went 3-1 at home last season against the Avs.

Sami Salo is day-to-day after injuring his knee in the second period against Minnesota. He leads Canucks defensemen with 10 points and a plus-5 rating.

The Avalanche finished with 45 shots, but failed to score on five power plays in a 4-1 loss to St. Louis on Thursday.

"Their goalie saw a lot of pucks," Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said. "We didn't get a lot of second chances and when we did get the second chances, we didn't finish them."

Peter Budaj made 21 saves for Colorado in the defeat. He gave No. 1 goalie Jose Theodore, who made 41 saves the previous night in a 5-3 win at Columbus, the day off.

Theodore is likely to return to the net Saturday, and would be trying to win consecutive starts against the Canucks for the first time since Nov. 27, 1999 and Nov. 30, 2000, while with Montreal. Since then, he's 1-6-1-1 with a 3.70 GAA against Vancouver.

Budaj allowed five goals on 22 shots in his only start against the Canucks, a 6-4 loss on Oct. 22, 2005.

One Avalanche player who has been successful against Vancouver is Colorado captain Joe Sakic, who leads the team with 13 points this season. The 37-year-old center has 59 assists and 87 points in 64 games against the Canucks - both career bests against any opponent.

Sakic had two assists against the Canucks in the first meeting this season.
