Avalanche-Sharks Preview

GAME: Colorado Avalanche (14-7-2-1) at San Jose Sharks (8-7-8-2).

TIME: Thursday, 10:30 p.m. EST.

The San Jose Sharks look to bounce back from their first loss in nearly a month as they host the Colorado Avalanche.

San Jose slipped to 3-6-6-1 after a 4-3 home loss to Colorado on Nov. 11, but went 5-0-2 in its next seven games as Toskala, filling in for injured starter Evgeni Nabokov, shined in net. Toskala boasted a 1.77 goals-against average and a .942 save-percentage while making six starts during the Sharks' run

However, he suffered his first loss in net since Oct. 28 in a 3-1 setback to Calgary on Tuesday.

Toskala was unable to stand up to the barrage of 33 shots and six power-play opportunities by the Flames, surrendering a goal with the man advantage and one on a penalty shot.

"We just mentally weren't sharp tonight," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "That's just one of those things that'll happen at the end of a road trip. But the points were there to be taken. If we had been a little sharper mentally, we might've had a chance to get a point."

The loss snapped San Jose's season-high five-game winning streak, and denied the Sharks their fifth straight road victory.

"Anytime a streak comes to an end, it's disappointing," San Jose forward Patrick Marleau said.

Milan Hejduk scored Colorado's lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Detroit on Sunday. David Aebischer, in his first full season as legendary goaltender Patrick Roy's replacement, continued his excellent play with 27 saves, improving to 7-1-1 in his last nine starts. Aebischer leads the league with 13 wins.

"He is getting better and he's getting more confidence," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said of Aebischer. "He has done what we expected."
