Coyotes Score Late In OT To Down Avs, 3-2

DENVER – Shane Doan scored with 58.9 seconds remaining in overtime Monday night to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 3-2 victory against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

Doan, who also had a goal in the first period, scored from the slot off a pass from Kyle Chipchura.

The Avalanche began overtime with a 4-on-3 power play after the Coyotes' David Moss pulled down Shane O'Brien with 18.2 seconds to play in regulation, but they failed to score for the fourth time in the game with the man advantage.

The Coyotes tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Oliver Ekman-Larsson at 11:39 of the third period. He beat goaltender Semyon Varlamov from a sharp angle shot in the right circle.

The Avalanche took a 2-1 lead in the second period on goals by Mark Olver and Matt Duchene that came 3:04 apart.

Olver was above the left circle when he accepted a pass out of the right corner from Milan Hejduk and beat Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith with a one-timer over the right shoulder at 2:24.

The assist gave Hejduk 799 career points. Only Joe Sakic, Peter Stastny and Michel Goulet have collected 800 or more points in Quebec/Colorado franchise history.

Duchene connected on a breakaway at 5:28 for his first goal since he scored twice on Jan. 24 against Columbus. Doan lost the puck after crossing the Colorado blue line and PA Parenteau knocked it to Duchene, who sped into the Coyotes end and slipped the puck beneath the sprawling Smith.

Keith Yandle nearly tied the game for the Coyotes at 17:40. He fired a shot from the left point behind Varlamov, who was screened, but the puck clanged off the far post and out of danger.

The Avalanche killed off a two-man disadvantage that lasted 59 seconds shortly after that with Greg Zanon (slashing) and Ryan O'Byrne (cross-checking) in the penalty box.

Doan gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first period on a wraparound at 9:10 after a giveaway by O'Byrne, whose clearing attempt from the corner was intercepted by Chipchura.

Smith stopped 16 shots in the period for the Coyotes and finished with 41 saves in the game.
