Equipment Drive Brings in 25,000 Donations
Third annual Jessica Redfield Ghawi Equipment Drive another success

Another year and another successful equipment drive held in honor of Jessica Redfield Ghawi.

An estimated 25,000 new and gently used pieces of equipment and $10,000 in cash donations were collected at Pepsi Center this past Saturday, Aug. 23, at the third annual Jessica Redfield Ghawi giveSPORTS Equipment Drive.

The equipment drive was inspired by Ghawi – a former intern of Altitude TV, sports participant and sports reporter – who was one of the victims that died during the July 20, 2012 Aurora theater shooting. Prior to her death, Ghawi was creating a fundraiser that would help provide hockey equipment to families affected by wildfires throughout Colorado that summer.

Among the people that came out to donate and volunteer this past weekend included the Avalanche's Joe Sakic and Adam Foote, the team's ice girls, Denver Broncos cheerleaders, members of the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Mammoth and Colorado Rapids, Altitude TV talent, and U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and Representative Ed Perlmutter. Sandy Phillips, Ghawi's mother, once again participated after making the trip from Texas with her husband Lonnie.

In partnership with Kroenke Sports Charities, the Teammates For Kids foundation matched up to $5,000 in cash donations for the giveSPORTS program.

"Teammates for Kids is proud to partner with Kroenke Sports Charities, the Colorado Avalanche players and A Precious Child in supporting our local community," said Jason Grahame of Teammates For Kids. "It is people like Jessica who have dreams of helping kids in need, that make this such a worthwhile cause."

Some of the sports items collected included gear for hockey, baseball, softball, basketball, boxing, golf, football, lacrosse, roller hockey, roller skating/blading, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

All equipment will be donated to A Precious Child – a local non-profit that works with more than 150 community organizations to find children in need to receive the equipment. In addition, monetary donations benefit A Precious Child’s giveSPORTS program, which helps provide financial assistance for sports-related registration fees.

The giveSPORTS Equipment drive has collected more than 60,000 pieces of equipment and over $24,000 in cash donation in its three years of existence.

A Precious Child will continue to accept items. More information can be found at www.apreciouschild.org.
