Matt Duchene Named To Canadian Olympic Team

Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene was named to Canada’s Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Hockey Canada announced today. Duchene will make his Olympic debut for Team Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games held Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.

Duchene, who turns 23 years old next week (Jan. 16), has represented Canada at three of the last four world championships, 2010-11 and 2013. He appeared in all eight games for Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm and Helsinki, finishing second on the team with four goals while adding one assist for five points. Matt totaled seven points (4g/3a) in seven games at the 2010 IIHF World Championship in Germany, finishing second on the team in goals and points (tied).

The Haliburton, Ontario native won a gold medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Kazan, Russia, recording eight points (5g/3a) in seven games. He also captained Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament in Slovakia, totaling five points (1g/4a) in four contests.

Duchene leads the Avalanche in scoring this season with 38 points (16g/22a) in 39 games. He also leads the team in goals, assists and shots (122). Matt is tied for second on the club in both power-play goals (4) and game-winning tallies (3).

Colorado’s first pick (third overall) in the 2009 Entry Draft, Duchene has 231 points (98g/133a) in 305 career games. He recorded his 200th career point earlier this year on Oct. 15 against Dallas, becoming the fourth-youngest player in franchise history to surpass the 200-point mark (22 years, 272 days).
