Gabriel Landeskog Named To Swedish Olympic Team
Avalanche captain will represent Sweden at 2014 Olympics
Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog was named to the 2014 Swedish Olympic Team, it was announced today. Landeskog will make his Olympic debut for Team Sweden at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games held Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.
Landeskog, 21, helped Sweden capture the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship held in Stockholm and Helsinki. He appeared in all 10 games at the tournament, tallying three goals and one assist with a +4 rating. Landeskog served as an alternate captain for Team Sweden at the 2012 IIHF World Championship, recording five points (1g/4a) in eight games. Gabriel was also an alternate captain for Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, but only played one game before being sidelined with a high ankle sprain. The Stockholm native’s international experience also includes representing his country at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
Colorado’s first pick (second overall) in the 2011 Entry Draft, Landeskog is in his second season as the Avalanche’s captain. He was named team captain on Sept. 4, 2012, becoming the youngest captain in NHL history at the age of 19 years, 286 days. Gabriel was 11 days younger than Sidney Crosby, who was 19 years, 297 days when he was named captain of the Penguins on May 31, 2007.
Landeskog ranks second on the Avalanche in scoring this season with 31 points (12g/19a) in 41 games. The left winger also ranks second on the club in assists and hits (95) and is tied for fourth in goals. He is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals.
Landeskog extended his point streak to a career-high seven games (3g/5a) in last night’s loss to Calgary. His previous long scoring streak was six games set Feb. 17-27, 2012. Landeskog’s assist last night gave him 100 points for his career. He now has 43 goals and 57 assists with a combined +24 rating in 159 NHL games. Landeskog won the 2012 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year.
