Matt Duchene Named Third Star of the Week

The NHL announced Monday that Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene has been named the third star in the league's "Three Stars" for the week ending Dec. 22.

Duchene led all players with seven assists and nine points last week, recording four multi-point games. His current streak of four consecutive multi-point games is the longest such streak of his career. He's the first Colorado player to score at least two points in four consecutive games since Paul Stastny did so in October 2008.

He compiled four points (one goal, three assists) in a back-to-back, home-and-home series with the Dallas Stars, a 6-2 victory on Dec. 16 (two assists) and a 3-2 loss on Dec. 17 (goal and an assist). Duchene then posted one goal and two assists for his fourth three-point game of the season, in a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 19. He capped the week by assisting on both Colorado goals in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 21.

Duchene has 12 points (4g/8a) in his last six games, and he leads the team in goals (16), assists (17), points (33), power-play goals (4), game-winning goals (3-tied) and shots (103).

The 22-year-old Haliburton, Ontario native has scored 98 career goals, two shy of 100. He would become the 20th player in franchise history and ninth in Avalanche history (since 1995-96) to reach the century mark in goals. He will also become the second player from the 2009 draft class to score 100 goals (John Tavares).

This is the third time in Duchene's career that he has been named to the NHL's Three Stars of the Week and his first since Dec. 13-19, 2010 when he was named first star. He was also named third star of the week for Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 2009.

Duchene is the third Avalanche player to be named to the league's three stars as goaltenders Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere were named co-second stars for Oct. 7-13. Duchene is the first forward to win the award since Ryan O'Reilly was named second star for Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2011.

Chris Stewart of the St. Louis Blues was named the league's first star while the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby was named the second star of the week.
