Jr. Pioneers Win Avs Quebec Qualifier Tournament

The Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee Hockey Team will look to defend its Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey championship this February, and the University of Denver Jr. Pioneers will be the team that will do attempt to do it.

The Jr. Pioneers punched their ticket to the largest pee wee hockey tournament in the world Tuesday night when they defeated the Arapahoe Ice Warriors 4-2 at Pepsi Center in the Avalanche's Quebec Qualifier Pee Wee Tournament championship game.

The pee wee team, comprised of 11- and 12-year-olds, receives an all-expenses paid trip and will represent the Avalanche organization in Quebec City, Quebec during the Feb. 12-23 tournament. American Airlines will provide air travel for the Avalanche Pee Wee Team in its journey from Denver to Quebec.

This is the 12th year that the Avalanche has provided an area hockey team a chance to compete in Quebec and wear the club's burgundy and blue colors.

The Jr. Pioneers and the Arapahoe Ice Warriors were two of the nine area hockey teams that competed in the Avalanche's 2013 Quebec Qualifier Tournament, which began last Thursday, Nov. 21. The other teams that participated in the competition were Arvada, Boulder, Colorado Rampage, Foothills, Hyland Hills, Littleton and Northern Colorado.

Each team played two opening-round games to determine seeding before the elimination rounds and semifinal games at Pepsi Center last Sunday.

Arapahoe represented the Avalanche at the 2013 tournament and went on to win the organization's first Quebec pee wee championship after winning all five of its games, including four contests in four days.
