Days before leaving for the 54th Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament, the Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee Team had a clinic with Patrick Bordeleau and Michael Sgarbossa of the club’s professional team.

Both alums of the tournament, Bordeleau and Sgarbossa gave tips and advice to the peewee players in hopes it could help them do something that they weren’t able to – bring home a championship banner.

The Avalanche Pee Wee Team did just that.

Colorado didn’t drop any of their five contests and won four games in four days to pick up the International-B Division Championship at the world’s most famous pee wee competition.

In the championship game on Sunday, the Avalanche jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the second period and never slowed up as they defeated the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 6-2 at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada.

Timothy DeBord led Colorado in the championship outing by picking up points on five of the team’s six goals. He finished with three goals and two assists in the game and ended up with 10 points in the tournament (eight goals, two assists).

DeBord’s teammate, Chase Gleason, also had a 10-point tournament with seven goals and three assists. Chase Jones finished with eight points in the five games, tallying two goals and six assists.

DeBord, Gleason and Jones finished 1-2-3 for the division’s scoring title.

The Avs opened competition on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Autriche and found themselves down 1-0 after the second period. The team responded by scoring three goals in the first 8:08 of the final period and held on for the 3-2 win.

Colorado then had three off days before their next tournament game on Thursday against the Boston Jr. Bruins. However, they weren’t totally off days as the team skated regularly to stay in game-mode.

Through the first 30 minutes versus the Bruins, the Avs found themselves in a back-and-forth struggle, but goals from Alex Harlan and DeBord in a matter of 13 seconds gave Colorado a 3-2 advantage in the second period. Harlan added his second of the game early in the third stanza to help secure a 4-2 win.

If the Avs had lost to the Bruins, they would have been out of the running for the title.

On Friday in the quarterfinals, Colorado scored three goals in the third period and handed the San Jose Jr. Sharks a 5-0 loss to advance to the semis on Saturday versus the Atlanta Fire.

Gleason scored a hat trick in the first 6:45 of the semifinal game to give the Avalanche a 3-0 lead in the first period, but Atlanta slowly chipped away and tied the contest at three goals apiece midway through the third.

Colorado retook the lead with less than seven minutes to play as Gleason scored his fourth tally of the game, and DeBord gave the Avs a two-goal cushion 36 seconds later to give the club a chance for the championship less than 24 hours later.

Throughout the tournament, the Avalanche split time between both of their goaltenders as Addison Zeich and Ben Reinholtz were equally outstanding in net. Zeich finished with a 2.50 goals-against average and two wins, while Reinholtz finished with a 1.33 goals against-average and three wins.

This is the 11th year in which the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club has given a Colorado team an all-expense paid trip to represent the organization in Quebec. This year’s squad was the Arapahoe Ice Warriors, who earned the title as the Avalanche Pee Wee Hockey Team after they defeated the Denver Jr. Pioneers in the Quebec Qualifier Tournament last November.
