Peter Forsberg Jersey Retirement Night

Peter Forsberg became the fourth Avalanche player to have his number retired in a special pregame ceremony prior to the team's season opener against the Detroit Red Wings. Fans roared as Forsberg made his way down to ice level.  

Avalanche players donned "Forsberg" jerseys stitched with the number 21 during warm ups and each in-game sweater had a commemorative patch sewn on the front.

Gabriel Landeskog scores his first career NHL goal 


The rookie found the back of the net in just his third career NHL game and it happened to be the game-tying goal in Columbus with 41 seconds left in regulation.  

Former Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda threw a wrister on net that ricocheted off of Landeskog's leg and into the net.

Landeskog was mobbed by his teammates as he jumped up and down in elation. 

The Avs went on the win the game 3-2 in a shootout.

Avs go 5-0 in the team's first road trip of the season

David Jones' overtime goal in Toronto capped off a perfect road trip for the young Avalanche squad.  

The Avs went 5-0 on a 10-day road trip through Boston, Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.  

It was the best road trip of at least five games in franchise history and the longest trip of the season.

Matt Duchene records his first career hat trick

With his father in the stands, Matt Duchene put on display of brilliance as he recorded his first career hat trick and four-point performance in a 7-6 overtime loss at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.  

Duchene's third goal was a thing of beauty, as he danced through three Stars players before sneaking a shot underneath Kari Lehtonen's right arm.

Ryan Wilson also earned three assists, a career high for the young defenseman

Avs erase a three-goal deficit to defeat the New York Islanders in overtime

The Avalanche rallied from an 0-3 deficit, their largest comeback win since overcoming an 0-4 deficit to beat the Calgary Flames 5-4 in a shootout on Oct. 16, 2007 at Pepsi Center.

Jan Hejda's first goal as a member of the Avalanche tied the game at three with 10:35 remaining in regulation.

It was the Avalanche's fifth consecutive victory against an Eastern Conference opponent during the 2011-12 season.

Milan Hejduk is named team captain

Hejduk, who had served as one of the permanent assistant captains since 2008-09, became only the third captain in Avalanche history, joining Joe Sakic and Adam Foote. 

Overall, Hejduk is just the 10th different captain in the franchise’s 32-year history in the National Hockey League. 

The Usti-nad Labem, Czech Republic native joined Peter Stastny as the only European-born captains in franchise history.

Shane O'Brien appears in his 400th career NHL game (4-1 loss vs. San Jose)

Paul Stastny moves past Mats Sundin for 10th place on the franchise's all-time points list 


His empty-net goal on November 26 against Edmonton was his 335th career point, moving him past Mats Sundin (334) for sole possession of 10th place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list.

Stefan Elliott scores his first career NHL goal

On a night when Paul Stastny moved past Mats Sundin on the franchise's all-time points list, rookie defenseman Stefan Elliott made his NHL debut and scored his first career NHL goal on a wrister from the point.

His goal also served as the game winner in the Avs' eventual 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

The rookie defenseman celebrated with several emphatic fist pumps before being mobbed by his teammates.

November 28 - December 4, 2011

Ryan O'Reilly is named the NHL's Second Star of the Week

The man known as "Factor" collected three straight multi-point games, tallying seven points (4g/3a) with a +7 plus/minus rating over the course of the week.

This marked the first time O'Reilly had ever recorded three consecutive multi-point games.

Avs record their longest single-season home winning streak 

The Avs'  2-1 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 23 at Pepsi Center was the club’s eighth consecutive win at home, the longest single-season home winning streak since the franchise moved to Denver in 1995.

Matt Duchene won the game with a wrister that caromed off the inside of Mathieu Garon's left skate with less than 1:30 remaining in overtime.  

The previous record was seven straight home wins from Jan. 23 - Feb. 25, 2003.

A pair of 500s

Chuck Kobasew and Jay McClement appear in their 500th NHL games on December 8 in Calgary.

The Avalanche forwards became the third set of NHL teammates in the 2011-12 season that have appeared in their 500th games on the same night.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere is named the NHL's Third Star of the Week

"Jiggy" posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.60 goals-against average and .951 save percentage during the week of December 19-25.

The veteran netminder made 31 saves in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 19, stopped 37 shots in a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 21 and helped the Avalanche post a milestone victory with 29 saves in a 2-1 overtime decision over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 23.

Giguere returns to Anaheim; Kobasew nets goal No. 100

Giguere, who won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, returned to Anaheim for the first time since being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in January 2010.

Acquired by Anaheim prior to the 2000-01 season, Giguere set numerous franchise records, including games played (447), wins (206) and shutouts (32).

Jiggy returned in fine fashion, stopping 18 shots in a 4-2 Avalanche victory.  Chuck Kobasew recorded his 100th career NHL goal in the same game, a mere 1:16 after former Av Kyle Quincey scored for Colorado.

Cody McLeod surpasses 700 career penalty minutes

The "Mac Attack" was in full effect as Cody McLeod earned 14 minutes worth of penalties in Colorado's 4-0 loss in St. Louis.  

McLeod earned two minor penalties (both for roughing) and a 10-minute misconduct.

O'Reilly reaches 200 games; McLeod reaches the century mark for the fifth consecutive season

Ryan O'Reilly became the youngest player in franchise history to reach 200 games, at 20 years, 339 days.

Cody McLeod became the first player in Colorado Avalanche history to register 100 penalty minutes in five consecutive seasons.

McLeod broke the previous mark of four straight set by Ian Laperriere from 2005-09.

A long time coming for Peter Mueller

His teammates embraced him as he looked up and pointed to the sky after scoring his first of two goals against Florida.

It was a long road to recovery for Mueller, who, up to this point (Jan. 18), missed 40 games in 2011-12 and all of the 2010-11 season due to a head injury.

But on this night, Mueller tied his career high with three points (2g/1a); his first three points of the 2011-12 season. Mueller’s goals were his first since April 4, 2010 vs. San Jose.

Gabriel Landeskog participates in All-Star Weekend

The Calder Trophy finalist represented the Avalanche at the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend.

Landeskog was one of 12 rookies that participated in the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

Landeskog named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for February

Landy led all rookies in scoring with 13 points (7g/6a) in 12 games during the month of February.

Landeskog edged New York Rangers left wing Carl Hagelin (3-6—9 in 13 games), Chicago Blackhawks center Marcus Kruger (5-2—7 in 14 games), New Jersey Devils center Adam Henrique (2-5—7 in 11 games), Philadelphia Flyers center Brayden Schenn (4-1—5 in 13 games) and Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk (3-2—5 in 11 games) for the award.

No. 92 sets a franchise rookie record for shots-on-goal in a single game

Lots of Landy love in these last three entries, but it's impossible to overlook the impact he had on this team. 

Landeskog fired nine shots-on-goal, setting a new franchise rookie record for shots in a single game on Feb. 4 vs. Vancouver.

The previous mark was eight shots done five times before, most recently by Marek Svatos during the 2005-06 campaign.

NOTE: Landeskog equaled this feat (nine shots) on Feb. 19 at Winnipeg

Sacco records his 100th win as a head coach, Stastny appears in 400, Barrie makes his debut

The Avalanche's 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks represented a milestone for two, and the NHL debut of another. 

The victory was Joe Sacco's 100th as a head coach in Paul Stastny's 400th career NHL game.  

Tyson Barrie made his NHL debut after being recalled from the Lake Erie Monsters, the Avs' American Hockey League affiliate, on Feb. 4.  Barrie finished with two blocked shots, one takeaway and one hit in 15:49 time-on-ice.

O'Reilly caps off dramatic overtime win on Military Appreciation Night

On a night when the Avalanche organization honored those who have served and continue to serve our country, Ryan O'Reilly sent the Pepsi Crowd into a frenzy after scoring the game-winning goal with just one second remaining in overtime.

The night began with a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter landing outside of the arena.  Inside Pepsi Center, Avs players wore special camouflage jerseys during warm up that were auctioned off in addition to limited edition t-shirts sold by the Avs Better Halves.

Erik Johnson lights the lamp in three consecutive games, setting a new career high

Not only was EJ's three-game goal scoring streak a career high, he became the first Avalanche defenseman to have a three-game goal streak since John-Michael Liles from Dec. 23-29, 2008.

The Duke passes Foote

Milan Hejduk appeared in his 968th career game, passing Adam Foote (967) for second place on the franchise's all-time games played list.

NOTE: Hejduk is just nine games shy of becoming the first player in Colorado Avalanche history to appear in 1,000 games.  The only other franchise player to reach 1,000 contests was Joe Sakic, who appeared in 508 with Quebec and 870 with Colorado (1,378 total).

Olver makes an immediate impact in season debut

Mark Olver, who was recalled from Lake Erie the day before, tallied the game-winning goal and had an assist in his season debut in Edmonton.

The 5-foot-10 forward also delivered three hits and finished with a +2 plus/minus rating. 

His +2 plus/minus rating was tied for the game high, along with Erik Johnson, Kyle Quincey, Ryan O'Reilly and Gabriel Landeskog.

Landeskog records a career-high six-game point streak

Gabriel Landeskog's impressive rookie campaigned continued with a career-high six-game point streak, recording 10 points (5g/5a) in that span.

Landy’s six-game run was the longest streak by an Avalanche player during the 2011-12 season and tied for the second-longest streak by an NHL rookie in 2011-12.  Adam Henrique had a point in seven straight games from Nov. 25 – Dec. 8.

Steve Downie collects his first two points as a member of the Avs

The Avalanche's newest player waisted little time getting on the board with his new club.  

After being acquired by the Avs just three days prior, Downie scored a goal and earned an assist in a lopsided 5-0 victory in Columbus.  It was only Downie's second game with the Avalanche.

Ryan O'Reilly surpasses the 100-point mark with three assists in Detroit

In addition to passing the century mark in career points, O'Reilly increased his assist streak to three games (5a) and earned eight assists (0g/8a) with a +8 rating over his last five games.

His three helpers in Detroit matched his career high.

Landeskog gets in his first NHL fight

It wasn't pretty, but Gabriel Landeskog tossed the mitts and went mano-a-mano with Columbus' Jack Johnson.

Despite being outweighed by Johnson (Landeskog is 204 pounds compared to Johnson's 231), Landy managed to land a right hand before being taken down.

March 1-6, 2012  

Semyon Varlamov's appears in his 100th career NHL game; personal-best shutout streak comes to an end

Semyon Varlamov appeared in his 100th career game on March 6 vs. Minnesota, but saw his career-high shutout streak of 129 minutes, 23 seconds snapped on Devin Setoguchi’s penalty shot goal.

Varlamov's previous shutout streak was 113:55 set just over a week prior from Feb. 22-27.

This was Varlamov’s third different scoreless streak of over 100 minutes during the 2011-12 season.

McGinn scores his first two goals as a member of the Avs

Jamie McGinn gave the Avs all the offensive firepower they would need, as he scored both of the team's goals in a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center.  

In addition, it marked his first-career two-goal game. 

"Ginner" finished the game with five shots-on-goal and a +1 plus/minus rating in 13:46 time-on-ice.

March 4-8, 2012

McGinn strikes again...and again...and again!

Jamie McGinn scored goals in three consecutive games from March 4-8 (four goals total); the longest goal streak of his NHL career.  

Included in this stretch was his first-career multi-goal game on March 4 in Minnesota and "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" on March 6 vs. Minnesota.  To top it off,  McGinn had a streak of three consecutive multi-point games in addition to his three-game goal streak.

Downie has a career-high night vs. Minnesota

Downie had a career-high three assists in the Avs' 7-1 win over the Wild at the Pepsi Center.  His three points matched a career best done twice before this season (Feb. 25 at Detroit and Dec. 31 vs. Carolina).

Downie had 10 points (2g/8a) and a +10 plus/minus rating in his first seven games with the Avalanche since joining the squad on Feb. 21.



March 10-20, 2012

Semyon Varlamov wins five consecutive starts

Semyon Varlamov won five consecutive starts equaling the longest single-season winning streak of his NHL career (Oct. 3-29, 2009).

It was in the midst of an impressive run for Varly, who was 10-2-0 in 12 starts with a 1.48 goals-against average, .951 save percentage and two shutouts (731 minutes, 367 shots, 18 goals).

In addition, Varlamov fashioned an 11-4-0 record, 1.68 GAA and .943 SV% (894 min, 440 shots, 25 goals) over his last 15 starts.

Landy becomes youngest player in franchise history to score an overtime goal; the birth of 'Landeskoging'

Feeling under the weather yet still giving it his all, Gabriel Landeskog's popularity skyrocketed after his now-famous goal celebration.

After firing a shot over the shoulder of Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller, Landeskog fell to the ice from sheer celebration and exhaustion. 

The pose, coined 'Landeskoging,' went viral across social media outlets and gained worldwide notoriety.  

It was Landeskog's first-career overtime goal and he became the youngest player in franchise history to score in the extra frame (19 years, 110 days).  He also set a new franchise record for shots by a rookie in a single season with 235, breaking the previous mark of 232 set by Peter Stastny in 1980-81 with Quebec.

McGinn ties the game with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation; Avs win 5-4 in a shootout

In arguably the most dramatic goal of the Avalanche season, Jamie McGinn sent Avs fans into a frenzy.

With time winding and the Avs down a goal in Buffalo, Gabriel Landeskog skated the puck from his own zone in full flight.  He blew past several Sabres en route to goaltender Ryan Miller.  Ryan O'Reilly gained possession of Landeskog's shot and threw it on net from a severe angle.  The puck trickled behind Miller and sat on the goal line where McGinn banged it home with 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Avs went on to earn five out of a possible six points on their East Coast road trip.

Fan Appreciation Night: Avalanche players give the jerseys off their backs to selected fans after the team's season finale

After time expired in a 6-1 defeat to the Nashville Predators, selected fans lined up on the ice in anticipation for what was to come.

Each fan held up a sign with the name and number of the player they randomly chose.  One lucky fan was selected via the team's official Twitter account (twitter.com/avalanche) in an exclusive drawing.  

Every player, including those who didn't play in the game, presented their jersey to a fan.
