Brad Malone Q & A

Brad Malone admitted he was surprised when his head coach with the Lake Erie Monsters, David Quinn, pulled him aside and told him he was "going up."  The native of Miramichi, NB, was the Monsters' hottest player earning nine points (2g/7a) in his last six games prior to being recalled.

Brad arrived in Edmonton last Thursday and made his NHL debut the next night with the Avalanche.

The 22-year-old rookie sat down with ColoradoAvalanche.com after Monday's practice to talk about his experience thus far.

Where were you when you were called up to the Avalanche?

We were actually just getting off of the bus.  We were driving into Abbotsford from Vancouver and coach [David] Quinn kind of pulled me aside and said I was going up.  It came out of nowhere.  And after 12 hours on a plane from Cleveland it was pretty surreal. I had a few hours to gather my things.  I took a nap.  It was tough because I was pretty excited, but I had some time to think about it and let things sink in.  I had the full day, the next day, before the game, so I had some time to relax, unlike some guys.

How has your experience been since being recalled?
It's been a dream come true.  Everything is first class and everyone is so professional, so I'm just trying to keep my eyes and ears open and my mouth shut.  I'm just trying to learn every day.  It's been unbelievable so far.

Brad Malone made his NHL debut in Friday night's contest against the Edmonton Oilers.

What's been the biggest adjustment coming from the AHL?
I've only been here for a few practices and a game, but players in the NHL are always consistent with being in the right positions at all times.  Everyone is so much bigger and stronger up here.  It's a big step and it's going to take some adjusting, but I'm learning and taking everything in stride.

How did you prepare for your first NHL game?
I had a little pregame skate with a few of the guys and I was pretty winded the whole day.  I couldn't sleep much. The nerves were high so there wasn't much fuel in the body.  I was ready to puke there at one point [laughs].  It was nice to get out there and get rid of the butterflies.

How many phone calls, tweets and texts did you get?
I got quite a bit, actually.  A lot of Facebook and Twitter messages.  A lot of people from back home have also been really supportive.  My buddies and teammates from the past and the guys in Cleveland have been really supportive and it's pretty humbling seeing so many people giving me good wishes.  It's nice.

What do you like to do in your downtime?
It's my first year as a pro, so it's been a new experience for me.  I'm thinking about picking up the guitar, but for now it's been music and a few TV shows.  Anything that provides a little 'R&R'.

You mention television programs - any in particular?
I've been getting into Dexter a lot.  And as far as music goes, I'm not really an iTunes kind-of-guy so I've been abusing the Pandora (music app) lately.  It's really just whatever comes on.

Where is your favorite go-to spot for food in Denver?
It's been Chipotle, hands down, since I got here this summer.  It's Chipotle 100%.  There's one five minutes away from my place in Lake Erie and we eat there about three times a week.  It's not very good on the caloric intake, but it's all right.
