Spotlight On: Duncan Siemens
After being drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, defenseman Duncan Siemens' summer schedule was anything but routine.
The 18-year-old participated in an Avalanche development camp (July), a Team Canada World Junior Championship development camp (August) and two more camps with the NHL club, plus one preseason game (September).
Upon his return to Saskatoon (WHL), Siemens was named captain of the Blades, becoming the 52nd player in the team's history to don the 'C'.
Siemens currently ranks second among Blades defensemen with two points (0-2=2) in 3 GP.
The Monsters played back-to-back preseason games against the Charlotte Checkers on Friday and Saturday, dropping both contests.
Lake Erie failed to get on the scoreboard in the preseason opener, falling to the Checkers by a score of 2-0.
Despite holding a one-goal lead for nearly half of the second game, the Monsters lost to the Checkers, 3-1. Goaltender Trevor Cann turned aside 28-of-30 shots.
The Lake Erie Monsters open the 2011-12 regular season at home against the Abbotsford Heat on Friday night. The two teams will meet again on Saturday.
Luke Moffatt (University of Michigan) shared the team-lead with seven shots on goal in a 3-2 loss to the Ontario Institute of Technology in exhibition play. The 2010 draft pick finished his freshman year with 13 points (5-8=13) in 36 games with the Wolverines in 2010-11.
Kieran Millan (Boston University) stopped 12 shots in a 6-4 exhibition defeat to St. Francis Xavier. Millan played two periods before being relieved. The Edmonton, Alberta, native appeared in 36 of BU's 39 games last year, compiling a 16-10-8 record with a 2.68 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. He also ranked fourth among Hockey East goaltenders in victories, winning percentage (.588), goals-against average and save percentage.
Calvin Pickard (Seattle Thunderbirds) has appeared in both contests thus far. The Moncton, N.B., native saved 40-of-45 shots in a 6-3 loss to the Portland Winterhawks in the season opener. Pickard then denied 33 of the Winterhawks' 36 shots in a 4-2 loss on October 1.
Troy Rutkowski (Portland Winterhawks) ranks tied for second in points among team defensemen with 1-1=2 in five games. The Edmonton, Alberta, native also has a team-best +3 rating.
Garrett Meurs (Plymouth Whalers) currently has 1-0=1 point in three games. The 2011 draft pick tallied 10-31=41 points in 68 games last year.
Stephen Silas (Belleville Bulls) currently has 1-1=2 points in four games thus far. His goal served as the game winner in a 2-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals on September 30.
Gabriel Beaupre (Val-d'Or Foreurs) is currently scoreless in six games. The '11 draft pick tallied 3-15=18 points in 66 games with Val-d'Or last season, and finished with 73 penalty minutes.
Dillon Donnelly (Shawinigan Cataractes) has a +2 rating through eight games. The Buffalo, NY, native had a league-high 21 fighting majors and ranked fifth in the QMJHL with 153 penalty minutes last year.
