Avalanche Signs J.S. Giguere
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed free-agent goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to a two-year contract through the 2012-13 season.

“Giguere is a veteran netminder who will complete our goaltending tandem,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He is a proven winner and his addition will be beneficial to our entire team.”

Giguere, 34, has appeared in 525 career NHL games, posting a 231-195-67 career record with a 2.53 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and 34 shutouts.  Giguere’s 231 wins rank ninth among active goaltenders.  He also has 52 career postseason games to his resume, where he’s compiled a 33-17 record with a 2.08 GAA and .925 Sv%.

The Montreal native backstopped the Anaheim Ducks to the 2007 Stanley Cup Championship and also captured the 2003 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after leading the Ducks to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against New Jersey.  He became the fifth player in league history to win the Conn Smythe on a losing team.

Giguere appeared in 33 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, compiling an 11-11-4 record with a 2.87 GAA and .900 Sv%.  Selected by Hartford in the first round (13th overall) of the 1995 Entry Draft, Giguere has spent 13 years in the NHL with the Whalers, Calgary Flames, Ducks and Maple Leafs.  He has won 30 or more games on four different occasions and played in the 2009 NHL All-Star Game.
