Getting to Know Niagara\'s Dougie Hamilton
Note:  This is the first installment in a series of features on some of the top draft-eligible players in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Dougie Hamilton refers to himself as a “complete” defenseman - a player who is strong in all three zones of the ice.  Standing at 6’4” and weighing a robust 187 pounds, Hamilton is one of the few defensemen blessed with the combination of size, strength and athleticism - attributes that make him a highly-coveted prospect going into the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings have Hamilton fourth overall among North American skaters and the highest ranking defenseman eligible in this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

In just his second season in the Ontario Hockey League, the St. Catherines, Ontario native finished the 2010-11 regular season ranked fourth in scoring among league defensemen with 12 goals, 46 assists and 58 points in 67 games, and his +35 rating tied him for 10th among all
Hamilton ranked fourth among defensemen in the OHL with 58 points during the regular season and ranked tied for second in the postseason with 16 points in 14 games.
players.  His stellar play continued into the playoffs finishing tied for second in scoring among all postseason defensemen with four goals, 12 assists and 16 points in 14 games.

More recently, he was one of 100 players to participate in the NHL Combine.  During the physical fitness portion of the Combine, held over the weekend in Toronto, Hamilton lasted 13 minutes on the V02 Max, a stationary bike that measures a player’s endurance and aerobic fitness.  Only defensemen Adam Larsson (Skelleftea) and David Musil (Vancouver Giants) lasted longer, both at 14 minutes.

Dougie grew up in a family deeply rooted in athletics.  His father, Doug, was an Olympic rower for Canada, winning a bronze medal in 1984 and competing in 1988.  His mother, Lynn, competed on Canada’s Olympic basketball team in 1984 and won World Championship gold and bronze medals.  His older brother, Freddie, was drafted 129th overall by San Jose in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and also plays for Niagara.

As a skilled puck-moving defensemen with size, finesse, grit and the ability to quarterback a power play, Hamilton has all the attributes to make him an elite two-way NHL defenseman.
