On Tuesday evening, the Colorado Avalanche will find out exactly where its top pick will fall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

The National Hockey League Draft Drawing, a weighted system used to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2011 NHL Draft, will take place on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. MT.

The League, in cooperation with TSN, will unveil the results of the Draft Drawing live during a 30-minute program, produced and televised by TSN in Canada. The special presentation will also be simulcast on VERSUS.

Colorado finished the season ranked No. 29 in the NHL’s standings and tentatively owns the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. All 14 non-playoff teams are involved in the Draft Drawing, but in accordance with NHL rules, a team may not move up more than four positions in the draft order. Because of that stipulation, only the five teams with the lowest regular season point totals (Edmonton, Colorado, Florida, the New York Islanders and Ottawa, in order) are eligible to gain the No. 1 overall pick.

In each of the past three Draft Drawings, the team with the lowest overall point total has retained the top selection. Edmonton chose Taylor Hall No. 1 overall in 2010, the New York Islanders selected John Tavares with the top pick in 2009 (in the same draft the Avalanche acquired Matt Duchene at No. 3 overall) and the Tampa Bay Lightning grabbed Steven Stamkos in the No. 1 slot in 2008.

The last example of a club moving up to gain the top overall pick came at the 2007 Draft Drawing.  That year, the Chicago Blackhawks went from the fifth overall pick to the first and subsequently selected Patrick Kane in the top spot.

There have been several other franchise-changing Draft Drawing moments, including the Washington Capitals moving from third to first to select Alex Ovechkin in 2004. The Florida Panthers slid up to gain the top overall pick in both 2002 (traded to Columbus, the Blue Jackets selected Rick Nash) and 2003 (traded to Pittsburgh, the Penguins chose Marc-Andre Fleury). Also, the Atlanta Thrashers moved from third to first in 2001 and selected Ilya Kovalchuk, the New York Islanders jumped from fifth to first in 2000 and tabbed Rick DiPietro and the Tampa Bay Lightning moved into the top spot from the third in 1998 and chose Vincent Lecavalier.

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft will take place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., with the first round taking place on Friday, June 24, and the subsequent rounds (two through seven) being held on Saturday, June 25.
