The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced tonight that the team has acquired defenseman Erik Johnson, forward Jay McClement and a first-round pick in either the 2011 or 2012 NHL Entry Draft from the St. Louis Blues.  In return, the Avalanche gave up the services of defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, forward Chris Stewart and a second-round selection in either 2011 or 2012.

“We are excited to be adding a top young defenseman in this league, a player who will have an impact on our blue line for several years to come,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “In addition, Jay McClement brings six years of NHL experience and will compliment our young hockey club.  He will also have an important role on our penalty killing unit.”

“Moreover, the acquisition of an additional first-round draft pick represents a valuable asset and is a key component of this overall package,” added Sherman.

Johnson, 22, was the first overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  He has appeared in 55 games for the Blues this season, tallying five goals and 14 assists.  The 6-foot-4, 232-pound defenseman made his NHL debut with St. Louis in 2007-08 and has gone on to collect 91 points (20g/71a) in 203 career NHL games.

A native of Bloomington, Minn., Johnson helped the United States capture a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.  He also represented Team USA at the 2007 IIHF World Championship and 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he earned a bronze medal.

Johnson was drafted out of the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.  Prior to turning pro, he played one season at the University of Minnesota (WCHA).

McClement, 27, has collected 16 points (6g/10a) while appearing in all 56 games for the Blues this season.  St. Louis’ first pick (second round, 57th overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft, McClement has spent his entire career with the Blues, tallying 156 points (52g/104a) in 449 NHL games.  The Kingston, Ontario native has appeared in all 82 games in each of the last two seasons.
