Avs Join In The Fight Against Cancer
The Colorado Avalanche will join in the annual NHL / NHLPA Hockey Fights Cancer initiative to honor those in the community who have struggled, or continue to struggle, with the disease.

The annual campaign, scheduled in October of each year, is supported by all NHL teams.

“This effort combines the resources and commitment of the NHL, our member clubs, players, officials, as well as key partners, and reflects our collective dedication to help find resources and exposure to eradicate the disease,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Colorado Avalanche support includes:

Oct. 20
-Avalanche Mascot Bernie visits with cancer patients at Rose Medical Center from 1-2 p.m.

-Avalanche players David Jones and Cody McLeod are scheduled to visit cancer patients at the Infusion Clinic at Colorado Integrative Cancer Care at the Medical Center of Aurora from 1:30-2:30 p.m. (1400 S Potomac St., Suite #215, Aurora, CO 80012)

Oct. 21
-Avalanche vs. San Jose Sharks at Pepsi Center has been designated as the Avalanche Hockey Fights Cancer game.  Special activities at the game include:

-Youth Skater – Nine-year-old Joshua Taylor from Lafayette, Colo., will participate as the Avalanche Youth Skater.  Taylor was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia when he was five years old.   He continues to receive treatment at The Children’s Hospital and plays hockey with the Lafayette YMCA.   Taylor was selected to participate as the Avalanche Youth Skater by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – an official Hockey Fights Cancer partner of the NHL.

-Avalanche Coaching Staff and Broadcasters will wear the official Fairway and Greene Hockey Fights Cancer lavender (which represents all cancers) necktie during the game.  Throughout the month, all players are wearing a Hockey Fights Cancer decal on their helmets.

-Zamboni - During the 2nd intermission, two young cancer survivors will climb aboard the Avalanche Zamboni for a special in-arena salute.  Ten-year-old Hunter Neeley and 14-year-old Austin Williams, both patients at HealthONE facilities, were selected for this special honor.

-Cancer Organizations represented at the game include:  Leukemia – Lymphoma Society, Jordan’s Angels, Marc Jr. Foundation, Dani’s Foundation, Shining Star Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation, MJ Steffes Foundation, Step Up for Cancer, American Cancer Society, HealthONE, Avon Walk Rocky Mountain.  These organizations will be providing cancer screening and patient service information as well as having their supporters at the game.

-Item of the Game- Avs fans will have the opportunity to support the Caps for Kids program at HealthONE’s Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children by participating in the Buy One/Get One free hat purchase at the game.  For each specially produced Avalanche hat purchased as part of the Item of Game Promotion, Altitude Authentics will donate a comparable hat to the Caps for Kids program which provides hats for children undergoing cancer treatment.

-Check presentation- During pregame, Avs Better Halves President Jennifer Foote will present a $40,000 check to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at The Children’s Hospital.  The check represents funds raised at the 2010 Avalanche Charity Brunch and the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer efforts.

-Hashtag Battle – During the Avalanche vs. Kings game on October 23, fans of both teams will engage in the NHL’s first such “Hashtag Battle” on Twitter, as Avs fans will include #GoAvs and Kings Fans #GoLAKings.  For each Hashtag mention posted during the game, the Avalanche and Kings Foundations will make a $1 donation to cancer research.

Nov. 8
-Break the Ice – Approximately 30 cancer patients and their siblings from The Children’s Hospital will join Avalanche Mascot Bernie and Avalanche players Ryan O’Reilly and Brandon Yip for a skating clinic at Pepsi Center.   In addition to skating instruction, the children and players will participate in a Flashes of Hope photo session.
