Avalanche Selects Joey Hishon
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club selected forward Joey Hishon with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft held tonight at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Hishon, 18, was limited to just 36 games with the Owen Sound Attack (OHL) this past season due to two separate injuries (foot/knee).  Despite missing two months of action, he still produced 40 points (16g/24a) for a team-leading 1.11 points-per-game average.  Hishon tied for the club lead with a +10 plus/minus rating.

In 2008-09, the Stratford, Ontario native led Owen Sound in goals (37), assists (44) and points (81) and was voted the “Best Playmaker” and “Best Stickhandler” in the OHL’s Western Conference by the league’s coaches.

“We’re really excited to be able to select Joey,” said Avalanche Director of Amateur Scouting Rick Pracey. “He’s a player with high character, instinct and skill, three traits we place high emphasis on.”

Hishon represented Team Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship and was the team’s leading scorer with 10 points (5g/5a) in six games. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound center also was named to Team Ontario at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

“I’m speechless right now. It’s a pretty surreal feeling and something I’ve dreamed of my entire life,” said Hishon. “I can’t wait to get to training camp and look forward to playing for the Colorado Avalanche some day. Denver is an unbelievable town with unbelievable fans, and I can’t wait to get started.”

NHL Central Scouting ranked Hishon No. 55 among domestic skaters in its final rankings for the 2010 Entry Draft.  "He's a high-energy, hustle bug,” said NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Edwards.  “He's got pretty good skill. He's one of those guys that is really noticeable when you see him play because of his work ethic and the energy he brings every night."

Off the ice, Hishon joined up with a local company in Owen Sound to create ‘Hishon for Hodgkins’ in which a donation is made to the Canadian Cancer Society for every goal ($100) and assist ($50) that he collects during home games.

The NHL Entry Draft resumes tomorrow (Saturday, June 26) with rounds 2-7 beginning at 11:00 a.m. MDT (televised on NHL Network).
