Duchene, 19, is the seventh player in franchise history—and fifth in Avalanche history—to be selected to the NHL All-Rookie Team.  He joins Bruce Bell in 1984-85, Peter Forsberg in 1994-95, Chris Drury and Milan Hejduk in 1998-99, John-Michael Liles in 2003-04 and Paul Stastny in 2006-07.  The rookie all-star team began in 1982-83.

“I’m honored to be named to the All-Rookie Team,” said Duchene, Colorado’s first-round pick (third overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.  “It was always a dream of mine to play for the Avalanche, and to be able to accomplish that and enjoy a season like we did was very special.”

Duchene, who was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year, led all NHL rookies in scoring with 55 points (24g/31a) in 81 games.  He joined Hejduk (1998-99) as the only Avalanche players to win the rookie scoring title.  Duchene tied for the rookie lead in goals and finished second in assists.  He also finished among the league’s top rookies in games (t-5th), power-play goals (2nd-10), shots (4th-180) and shooting percentage (1st-13.3%).

The Haliburton, Ontario native tied for the team lead in games played and ranked second on the Avalanche in goals.  He led the club in power-play tallies and multi-goal games (6).

Duchene's 55 points were the second-highest total by a rookie in Avalanche history behind only Paul Stastny’s 78 in 2006-07.  Matt’s 24 goals were the third-highest total by an Avs rookie, trailing Marek Svatos (32 in 2005-06) and Stastny (28 in 2006-07).

After collecting 10 points (3g/7a) and a -9 rating in his first 25 games, Duchene had 45 points (21g/24a) and a +10 rating over his last 56 contests.  He was the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for December and scored the winning goal in the shootout to clinch a playoff spot for the Avs on April 6 at Vancouver.

Voting for the All-Rookie Team is conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the conclusion of the regular season.
