After a stellar season that included a berth in the playoffs and a nomination for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie, Matt Duchene isn’t done playing hockey quite yet.

On Saturday, the forward was officially named to Team Canada’s entry for the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship. This year’s event will take place from May 7-23 in Cologne, Gelsenkirchen and Mannheim, Germany.

Joining Duchene on Canada’s roster will be defenseman Kyle Cumiskey, who was also among the roster additions Team Canada General Manager Mark Messier announced on Saturday.

A native of Haliburton, Ontario, Duchene was notified of his selection earlier this week and has been skating over the past few days in preparation for the event.

While this will be Duchene’s first time representing his home country at the World Championship, the 19-year-old is no stranger to international play. Duchene won a gold medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Kazan, Russia, recording eight points (5g/3a) in seven games. He also served as captain for Canada’s gold-medal-winning team at the 2008 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament in Piestany, Slovakia, where he totaled five points (1g/4a) in four contests.

During his rookie season, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound center skated in 81 games and led all NHL rookies with 55 points (24g/31a), becoming the second player in Avalanche history to win the rookie scoring title (Milan Hejduk, 1988-89). He shared the rookie goal-scoring lead with Team Canada teammate John Tavares and ranked second in assists.

The 2010 IIHF Men’s World Championship will be Cumiskey’s first opportunity to represent Canada at the international level. A native of Abbotsford, B.C., Cumiskey led all Avalanche defensemen with seven goals during the 2009-10 campaign after making his first appearance on an Opening Night roster.

Overall, the blueliner finished with 20 points (7g/13a) in 61 games during his first full NHL season. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defenseman set a franchise record this past season for the faster overtime goal when he scored nine seconds into overtime on Feb. 10 versus Atlanta.

Duchene and Cumiskey will be looking to help Canada return to the top of the medal podium.

Team Canada took home the gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Championship and has claimed silver each of the last two seasons – falling to Russia in the gold-medal game in both 2008 and 2009.
