Avalanche Signs Shattenkirk
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, the club’s first-round selection (14th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, to an entry-level contract.  He will report to Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters.

Shattenkirk, 21, served as Boston University’s captain as a junior this season, becoming the first junior to serve as lone captain of the Terriers since Bob Smith in 1961-62.  Shattenkirk finished second among BU defensemen in scoring with 29 points (7g/22a) while appearing in all 38 games.  He led the Terrier defense in assists, second best on the team, and tied for first in the conference with four short-handed points (1g/3a).

“We’re excited that Kevin has signed with the organization,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman.  “He has a bright future ahead and we look forward to seeing him start his professional career.”

The Greenwich, Conn., native helped the Terriers capture the 2009 NCAA championship, assisting on Colby Cohen’s overtime winning goal in the national title game against Miami (Ohio).  Shattenkirk was named to the 2007-08 Hockey East All-Rookie Team as a freshman and followed that up by being named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star as a sophomore in 2008-09.  He finished his collegiate career with 78 points (18g/60a) in 121 games.

Shattenkirk represented the United States at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa, where he led all tournament defensemen in assists (8) and points (9-tied) in six games.  The 5-foot-11, 193-pound defenseman captained the U.S. National Under-18 Team in 2006-07, helping the Americans win the silver medal at the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
