Avalanche Acquires Mueller, Porter
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired forwards Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Wojtek Wolski.

“Peter is a skilled young player who has a tremendous upside,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman.  “We feel he will be an important addition to our lineup.”

“Kevin will add more depth up front,” added Sherman.  “He spent some extended time in the NHL last season and we look forward to having him join our organization.”

Mueller was the Coyotes’ first-round selection (eighth overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft.  The 21-year-old has appeared in 54 games for Phoenix this year, tallying 17 points (4g/13a).

The 6-foot-2, 204-pound center is in his third season with the Coyotes.  As a rookie in 2007-08, Mueller finished second among all NHL rookies with 22 goals and was tied for third with 54 points in 81 games played.  In 207 career games, Mueller has 39 goals and 68 assists for 107 points.

A native of Bloomington, Minn., Mueller represented the United States at the 2008 IIHF World Championship in Halifax and Quebec City.  He also helped lead Team USA to the bronze medal at 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden.

Porter, 23, has spent most of this season with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League, where he ranks third on the team with 40 points (15g/25a) in 52 games.  He has also appeared in four games with the Coyotes this year (no points).  The Detroit, Mich., native made his NHL debut with Phoenix last season, recording five goals and five assists in 34 games.

Phoenix’s fifth selection (fourth round, 119th overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft, Porter captured the Hobey Baker Award as a senior at the University of Michigan (CCHA) in 2007-08.  He represented Team USA at both the 2005 and 2006 IIHF World Junior Championships.

“These two players fit into our philosophy and they both have the best years of their professional careers ahead of them,” said Sherman.
