Spotlight On: Tyson Barrie After being sidelined for nearly a month, Avalanche prospect Tyson Barrie has come back with purpose. During the Kelowna Rockets’ third game of the season, a Sept. 25 contest at Kamloops, Barrie suffered knee and upper-body injuries that put him on the sidelines for four weeks. Barrie returned to Kelowna’s lineup on Oct. 23 and was held off the score sheet that night, an occurrence that hasn’t happened since. From that time on, Barrie has recorded a point in each of the Rockets’ 10 games, totaling 16 points (4g/12a) during that stretch. Despite playing in only 14 games so far this season (when many of his opponents have nearly double that total under their belts), Barrie ranks in a tie for 12th among WHL blueliners with 18 points (5g/13a). Lake Erie Monsters
The Monsters walked away with three points following three games last week, beginning with a 2-1 shootout loss to Grand Rapids on Wednesday. Brock Bradford scored Lake Erie’s lone goal and Trevor Cann stopped 34-of-35 shots through overtime.

After being handed a 6-0 loss by the Houston Aeros on Friday, the Monsters bounced back with a 3-1 win in Saturday’s rematch against Houston. Brian Willsie had a goal and an assist for Lake Erie, while Darren Haydar and Brian Fahey also scored. Tyler Weiman picked up his fifth victory of the season after stopping 19-of-20 shots.

Charlotte Checkers
Colorado’s ECHL affiliate earned five out of a possible six points last week, beginning with a 4-2 win Friday against Elmira.

Avalanche draftee Codey Burki registered an assist Saturday as the Checkers fell to South Carolina, 3-2, in a shootout. Charlotte ended the week by capturing a 6-4 victory over Elmira.

NCAA
-Forward Paul Carey scored a goal and added an assist Saturday in Boston College’s 7-1 win over Vermont. After recording nine points (5g/4a) in 24 games during his freshman year, Carey is currently tied for fourth on the Eagles’ scoring chart with seven points (3g/4a) in eight contests.

-Kevin Shattenkirk and Colby Cohen each notched an assist and Kieran Millan made 17 saves, but Boston University dropped a 6-3 decision to Merrimack on Friday. The Terriers turned the tables during Saturday’s rematch, with Shattenkirk scoring a goal and then assisting on Cohen’s game-winning power-play tally in a 6-4 triumph. Shattenkirk leads the team with nine points (2g/7a) in nine games, while Cohen ranks third with six points (3g/3a).

-Mike Carman netted his first goal of the season in the University of Minnesota’s 4-1 win over Bemidji State on Saturday. Kent Patterson took the loss during Sunday’s rematch, a 6-2 Bemidji State victory.

-North Dakota’s Brad Malone scored his first goal of the year in a 3-2 loss to St. Cloud State on Saturday. Malone has eight points (1g/7a) in 10 contests.

-With an assist Saturday during Northern Michigan’s 3-2 win over Notre Dame, forward Mark Olver continues to lead the Wildcats in goals (6), assists (7) and points (13) through 10 games.

QMJHL
-Quebec forward Kelsey Tessier netted two assists in his lone game last week, a 5-4 win over Drummondville.

Tessier also suited up for Team QMJHL on Monday Night in the first game of the 2009 Subway Super Series. Tessier did not record any points, but Team QMJHL beat Team Russia, 3-1.

-Joel Chouinard scored twice in Victoriaville’s 4-3 win over Lewiston last Wednesday, the second straight contest in which he netted a pair of goals. The defenseman added an assist on Friday against Gatineau, giving him a three-game point streak (4g/1a).

WHL
-Saskatoon defenseman Stefan Elliott picked up three assists on Friday in a 4-3 win over Brandon and then added another helper the following night as the Blades topped Prince George, 3-2. With 23 points (8g/15a) in 24 games, Elliott is tied for second among WHL defensemen in points and ranks second in the league with a +21 plus/minus rating.

OHL
-Mississauga blueliner Cameron Gaunce totaled two assists in three games last week. Gaunce leads all team defensemen and is tied for fourth overall on the club with 18 points (3g/15a) in 22 games.

-Brandon Maxwell split a pair of decisions in net for Kitchener. The goaltender stopped 37-of-41 shots in a 6-4 win over London on Friday and then made 22 saves as the Rangers were defeated by Plymouth, 5-1, on Saturday. Maxwell owns an 8-3-0-2 record with a .916 save percentage in 13 appearances.

USHL
-Nathan Condon totaled five points (3g/2a) as the Fargo Force split a weekend series with the Indiana Ice. Condon, who ranks third on the team with 12 points (6g/6a) in 13 games, currently owns a three-game goal-scoring streak.
