Cumiskey Under Contract
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has signed defenseman Kyle Cumiskey and forward prospect Justin Mercier.

“Kyle is another young player who has NHL experience with our team,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman.  “He is a puck-moving defenseman who brings elements of speed and skill to our lineup.  Justin recently completed a successful college career and we look forward to having him begin his professional career with our organization.”

Cumiskey, 22, appeared in six games with the Avalanche in 2008-09 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury on Jan. 29.  Prior to the injury, Cumiskey also saw action in 28 games for the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League, where he totaled 17 points (5g/12a).  The Abbotsford, B.C., native earned a spot on the Canadian All-Star Team at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic and tallied a goal, assist and was +6 at the All-Star Game on Jan. 26 in Worcester, Mass.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound blueliner was Colorado’s ninth selection (seventh round, 222nd overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  Cumiskey has skated in 53 career NHL games, tallying seven points (1g/6a).

Mercier, 22, spent the last four seasons at Miami (Ohio) University (CCHA), where he helped lead the RedHawks to the 2009 NCAA championship game by totaling 29 points (14g/15a) in 40 games as a senior.  The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward finished his collegiate career with 104 points (52g/52a) in 157 contests, becoming the first player in school history to record 100 career points and be a part of 100 victories. A native of Erie, Pa., Mercier was the Avalanche’s eighth selection (sixth round, 168th overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft.
