Avs Acquire Quincey, Preissing, Pick
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has acquired defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, along with a fifth round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Ryan Smyth. The trade is conditional upon the players passing a physical.

“We are pleased to be adding two quality NHL defensemen,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman.  “Kyle and Tom are both versatile players who can contribute at both ends. They will add defensive depth to our lineup.”

Quincey, 23, led all Kings defensemen in scoring last season with 38 points (4g/34a) in 72 games.  Quincey, who was claimed off waivers from Detroit at the beginning of the year on Oct. 13, led all Kings players with 27 power-play points (which was 12th among NHL defensemen).  The Kitchener, Ontario native was Detroit’s second pick (132nd overall) in the 2003 Entry Draft.

Preissing, 30, appeared in 22 games for the Kings in 2008-09, tallying seven points (3g/4a).  The Arlington Heights, Illinois native also skated in 14 contests for Manchester of the American Hockey League, notching six points (2g/4a). He missed 13 games with the Kings from Feb. 3-27 due to an upper-body injury.

Preissing played four seasons at Colorado College, where he was an All-American and Hobey Baker Award finalist as a senior in 2002-03.  Originally signed by San Jose as a non-drafted free agent, Preissing has gone on to record 131 points (31g/100a) in 322 NHL games with the Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles.

Smyth, 33, tallied 59 points (26g/33a) in 77 games last season.  Signed by Colorado as a free agent on July 1, 2007, Smyth recorded 96 points (40g/56a) in 132 games with the Avalanche.
