Although most NCAA and USHL teams are taking some time off during the holiday season, there’s still plenty of action for ColoradoAvalanche.com’s weekly Farm Report.
Boston University’s Kevin Shattenkirk is currently wearing the Red, White and Blue for Team USA at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, while the Lake Erie Monsters and Johnstown Chiefs continued regular season play.
In addition, it has been business as usual for Colorado’s prospects in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League.
IIHF World Junior Championship
Shattenkirk – Colorado’s first-round selection in 2007 – has helped Team USA jump out to a 2-0 record at the 2009 World Junior Championship by totaling three assists through two games. Shattenkirk, an alternate captain for the squad, leads all U.S. defensemen in points and ranks fourth on the team overall.
He recorded a helper in Team USA’s 8-2 drubbing of Germany on Friday (Dec. 26) and then added a pair of power-play assists in a 4-3 win over the Czech Republic on Sunday.
The U.S. National Junior Team’s next challenge will come Tuesday night when the club faces Kazakhstan.
Lake Erie Monsters
Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate only had two games on its schedule last week. The club dropped a 3-1 decision to the Toronto Marlies on Friday and was shut out by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night.
Kyle Cumiskey scored Lake Erie’s only goal in Friday’s loss, with an assist going to Nathan Smith. Tyler Weiman turned aside 25-of-28 shots in a losing effort.
Jason Bacashihua got the starting nod in goal during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Grand Rapids. The netminder made 31 saves in the game.
Johnstown Chiefs
Colorado’s East Coast Hockey League affiliate split a home-and-home set with the Elmira Jackals last week. The Jackals first claimed a 2-0 win on their home ice Friday. Ian Keserich – who attended training camp with Colorado – stopped 19-of-21 shots in the loss. The Chiefs took the tail end of the weekend series, securing a 6-5 win in Johnstown on Sunday.
QMJHL
-Kelsey Tessier notched a power-play goal, his 12th tally of the season, in Quebec’s 3-2 win over Chicoutimi on Sunday evening. Tessier is on nearly a point-per-game pace this season, with 33 points (12g/21a) in 34 contests.
-Victoriaville’s Joel Chouinard recorded an assist on the game-tying goal Saturday during his club’s 4-3 victory over Lewiston. The defenseman also notched an assist on the Tigres’ lone tally in a 4-1 loss to Montreal on Sunday. Through 36 games, Chouinard has 18 points (6g/12a).
-Lewiston goaltender Peter Delmas was handed a loss in his lone appearance this past week. Delmas made nine stops in a 5-4 loss to Gatineau on Monday evening.
OHL
-Cameron Gaunce had another big week for the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, totaling seven points in four games. Gaunce began the week by assisting on the eventual game-winning goal in a 5-2 win over Kingston on Wednesday. He then went on to tally three helpers in a 6-5 overtime victory against Plymouth on Friday. Gaunce’s third helper of the contest was the primary assist on the game-winner in the extra session.
Gaunce concluded the week by scoring two power-play goals and adding an assist as Mississauga dispatched Kitchener by a 7-5 count on Saturday.
The defenseman has totaled 32 points (12g/20a) in 34 games this season and has recorded 15 points (4g/11a) in 10 games during the month of December.
-London blueliner Kevin Montgomery picked up two assists in an 8-1 thumping of Peterborough on Thursday and then drew the secondary assist on the overtime winner in the Knights’ 5-4 victory over Sault Ste. Marie the following night. Montgomery now has a three-game point streak (0g/5a) in the works.
Knights netminder Trevor Cann, who was been sidelined recently with a concussion, is expected to return to action in the next few days.
