Avs Embark on Five-Game Road Swing

Monday, 01.07.2008 / 1:08 PM / Features
By Aaron Lopez  - Special to ColoradoAvalanche.com
The Avalanche begins a five-game road swing on Tuesday in Detroit that ends a week later with a contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, Jan. 15. It’s one of only two five-game trips this season for the Avalanche, which will embark on a road swing of similar length from Feb. 20-27.

The club will play a pair of back-to-back games during the outing. First, the Avalanche faces the Washington Capitals the day after taking on the Red Wings. After two days off, Colorado will take on the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, before wrapping up the trip against the Lightning.

The Avalanche has posted a 2-0-2 record in its last four road contests, gaining six out of a possible eight points in that span. That type of consistency – playing well both at home and on the road – is something that Avalanche Head Coach Joel Quenneville has been looking for.

“We’ve been playing better lately,” said Quenneville. “We’re playing a better team game. We want to take it one game at a time going into a really tough building in Detroit. I thought we played relatively well against them last time. That’s the type of game we want to play, with better results.”

Avalanche assistant captain Ian Laperriere believes the team needs to continue to simplify its game on the road in order to keep up its recent success.

“You can’t go out and expect to put on a show and be fancy,” said Laperriere. “We’re going to get burned if we do that and I think we realize that now. If we want to be successful on the road we need to simplify our game.”

Arnason Close to Returning
Forward Tyler Arnason is likely to return to the lineup on Wednesday against the Capitals. Arnason, who has missed the last 11 games after suffering a wrist injury against Columbus on Dec. 12th, has totaled 10 points (3g/7a) in 30 games this season.

Theodore to Start vs. Detroit
Quenneville stated that Jose Theodore will get the starting nod in goal against the Red Wings on Tuesday. Theodore is coming off a solid 23-save performance during Saturday’s 2-1 overtime victory against the New York Islanders.

“He’s coming off a real strong game,” said Quenneville. “I thought he played well against L.A. the other day too. He’s got some momentum here.”

In 17 games this season, Theodore has posted an 8-8-1 record with a 2.78 goals-against average.
