The Colorado Avalanche received a spark from Marek Svatos in the form of two goals – one in each of the first two periods – but was ultimately handed a 5-2 defeat by the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night at Pepsi Center.

The forward, who now owns five goals in his last six contests, also had a multi-goal game earlier this season on Nov. 3 against the Vancouver Canucks.

“I think we got the momentum in the second period, I think we played very well,” said Svatos. “We were moving our legs and playing pretty good hockey.

“Unfortunately the third one they scored on a bad penalty by me with four minutes left in the game. But we had lots of chances and should have put the team away in the second or in the beginning of the third period but we didn’t.”

With the Avs down 2-0 late in the first period following a pair of Steven Reinprecht tallies at 13:15 and 14:17, Svatos notched a big goal to cut Colorado’s deficit in half heading into the first intermission.

Kyle Cumiskey started the play with a long outlet pass that just missed Jaroslav Hlinka. However, Hlinka was able to catch up with the puck deep in Phoenix’s zone and made a pass out front to Svatos, who buried his own rebound at 17:40.

Svatos continued his strong play in the second period, evening the game, 2-2, on his 15th goal of the season at the 8:02 mark. Andrew Brunette made a feed from behind the net into the low slot to Svatos, who put a shot past the outstretched glove of Phoenix netminder Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Kosice, Slovakia, native had several other chances throughout the remainder of the middle frame, including a rebound attempt with only seconds remaining, but Bryzgalov denied Svatos the hat trick.

The Coyotes went on to score three goals in the third period, including two empty-net tallies, to ice the game.

Shane Doan struck on the power play with Svatos in the penalty box at 16:49, followed by shorthanded empty-net tallies from Radim Vrbata and Reinprecht again at 19:02 and 19:23, respectively.

Notes: Svatos is now tied with Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny for team goal-scoring lead with 15… Colorado lost its third straight at home but is still 15-6-0 at Pepsi Center this year.
