Busy Week on the Farm
Healey Scores Two, Lake Erie Drops a Pair
The Lake Erie Monsters dropped a pair of road games to the Houston Aeros over the weekend, losing by a 3-2 count on Friday (Nov. 2) and by a 2-1 score in a shootout on Sunday.

In Friday’s contest, Eric Healey and Cody McCormick each notched a goal for Lake Erie, while netminder Tyler Weiman stopped 28-of-31 shots.

During Sunday’s game, Healey recorded the only regulation goal for Lake Erie, while Weiman stopped 21-of-22 shots to send the game into a shootout. From there, Healey was the lone Monster to capitalize in five total attempts, while the Aeros snuck two shots past Weiman in the shootout to earn the win. Healey now leads the Monsters with seven points (4g/3a) in 10 contests.

Lake Erie will open a five-game home stand on Saturday (Nov. 10) against Quad City, followed by a Sunday tilt against Toronto.

-On Friday, Miami (Ohio) University junior Justin Mercier was named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for October after he led the nation in goal scoring during the month. Recording six goals in six games, Mercier led the No. 1 RedHawks to a 6-0-0 record in October while tying for the CCHA scoring lead with eight points (6g/2a).

One night after receiving the honor, Mercier scored the game-winning goal in Miami’s 3-2 victory over Northern Michigan University, which improved his team’s record to 8-0-0 on the season.

-University of Minnesota forward Mike Carman was one of 20 players named to the U.S. Men’s Select Team that will compete at the 2007 Deutschland Cup from Nov. 8-11 in Hannover, Germany. The tournament will include entries from Germany, Denmark, Japan, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States. Team USA will play an exhibition contest versus Germany on Wednesday (Nov. 7) before opening the Deutschland Cup on Thursday against the host nation.

-Ohio State University senior Tom Fritsche tallied an assist Sunday in his team’s 4-2 loss to Ferris State University. Frische leads all current Buckeyes with 92 career points (28g/64a) and looks to become the first Ohio State skater to reach the 100-point plateau since 2003-04, when Paul Caponigri, Scott May and Dave Steckel all reached the century mark.

-Boston University freshman and 2007 first-round selection Kevin Shattenkirk recorded his first NCAA goal and multi-point game (1g/1a) on Thursday against Providence College. Two days later, Shattenkirk and Colby Cohen notched an assist apiece in the Terriers’ 7-4 victory over UMass-Lowell.

-University of Michigan netminder Billy Sauer stopped 53-of-56 shots over the weekend in a pair of victories over the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Sauer, who carries a 2.49 goals-against average in eight appearances, has been the only Wolverine goaltender to see action during No. 2 Michigan’s 7-1-0 start.

Playing in his second game of the season, Colorado Eagles netminder Ian Keserich stopped an impressive 40-of-44 shots - but was saddled with the loss - as Colorado dropped a 5-4 shootout decision to the Amarillo Gorillas. Keserich stopped four-of-five attempts in the shootout, but the Eagles failed to score on any of their attempts.

-Peterborough Petes netminder Trevor Cann will suit up for Team OHL in the 2007 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge. The fifth annual ADT Canada-Russia Challenge will be held from Nov. 19-29 throughout Canada as Canadian Hockey League All-Star Teams from each of its three member leagues (OHL, WHL and QMJHL) compete against a Russian National Junior Team in a six-game series. The two OHL games will take place on Thursday, Nov. 22 and Monday, Nov. 26. The event also serves as an evaluation of the players in the selection process for the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship.

-London Knights defenseman Kevin Montgomery recorded two assists on Sunday against the Guelph Storm. Montgomery ranks fourth on London’s scoring chart and first among defenseman with 15 points (2g/13a).

-Cedar Rapids goaltender Kent Patterson was placed on the 45-day injured reserve list after undergoing sport hernia surgery last week. Patterson has yet to see action with the RoughRiders this season.

-2007 fifth-round selection Paul Carey continued his dominance of the USHL with a six-point performance (3g/3a) in two games against the Lincoln Stars this past weekend. For his efforts, Carey was named the USHL's Offensive Player of the Week. Carey leads the league with 11 goals and is tied for first with 16 points - all while carrying a nine-game point streak.
