Post-Game Notes

The Colorado Avalanche attempted a late comeback, but ultimately, ran out of time in a 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche, which was handed its first home loss of the season, received a pair of goals from Marek Svatos in the game.

Daniel Sedin scored the first period’s lone goal when he beat Colorado netminder Peter Budaj at 10:20.

Avalanche defenseman Jeff Finger tied the game at the 11:53 mark of the second frame with a shorthanded effort. Wyatt Smith made a feed from the left boards into the slot to Finger, who skated around Daniel Sedin before putting a backhander over Roberto Luongo’s right shoulder.

The goal was the second of Finger’s career and the first since March 1, 2007 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Vancouver took a 2-1 lead on a Brendan Morrison power-play tally at the 15:54 mark of the second period and then took a two-goal lead on Ryan Kesler’s tally at 1:16 of the third frame.

Svatos brought the Avalanche within a goal at the 5:06 mark of the third on a power-play marker. Skating along the left boards, Svatos kicked the puck ahead where it was corralled by Paul Stastny behind the Vancouver goal. Stastny then threaded a pass to Svatos, who had cut toward the goalmouth. The goal was Svatos’ team-leading sixth tally of the season.

Daniel Sedin again extended Vancouver’s lead to two goals with a power-play goal at 13:25.

In the closing minutes, Colorado Head Coach Joel Quenneville pulled netminder Peter Budaj to give the Avs an extra attacker, which paid off when Svatos notched his second tally of the night off assists from Stastny and Joe Sakic. However, only 10 seconds remained after Svatos' tally, and the Avalanche were unable to fully complete the comeback.

Notes: Tonight’s game marked the 100th appearance of Peter Budaj’s career…The netminder now holds a 50-29-12 career record…Svatos now has four goals in the last four games…Sakic extended his assist/point streak to seven games (1g/9a) with his third period helper.
