Lake Erie Opens Inaugural Season
The Lake Erie Monsters opened their 2007-08 campaign on Saturday (Oct. 6), dropping a 3-2 decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Jose Theodore played the entire game in goal for Lake Erie while completing his rehabilitation and stopped 21-of-24 shots.

Matt Hussey and Kyle Cumiskey notched a goal apiece for Lake Erie, while Michael Vernace tallied two assists. Hussey was named the second star of the game, while Vernace earned third star status.

After a brief hiatus, the Monsters’ schedule becomes very busy this weekend. The club will travel north to face the Toronto Marlies on Friday before hosting the Hamilton Bulldogs and Toronto at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

NCAA
Justin Mercier notched a hat trick and also added an assist in Miami (Ohio) University’s 5-0 exhibition victory over the University of Waterloo on Saturday. Two of the junior forward’s three goals came on the power play.

• Billy Sauer stopped 16-of-17 shots to lead the University of Michigan to a 5-1 exhibition victory over Western Ontario on Sunday.

• The Minnesota Golden Gophers announced on Wednesday (Oct. 3) that senior defenseman Derek Peltier will serve as the team’s captain for the 2007-08 season, while junior forward Ryan Stoa was tabbed as an assistant captain.

CHL
• Just up the road from Pepsi Center, the Colorado Eagles opened training camp on Monday. Ian Keserich, who saw action in 47 games last year with the USHL’s Tri City Storm, is one of four goaltenders battling for a roster spot.

OHL
• Nigel Williams is off to a hot start with the Saginaw Spirit. Through seven games, Williams ranks fourth in the OHL in defensemen scoring with nine points (2g/7a).

• Kevin Montgomery picked up a pair of assists over the weekend for the London Knights. Montgomery currently leads all London defensemen in scoring with three assists through five games.

Trevor Cann has backstopped the Peterborough Petes to a 3-1-0-1 record to start the 2007-08 campaign. Through five games, Cann has posted a .902 save percentage and 3.10 goals-against average

WHL
T.J. Galiardi is making some noise during his first season in the Western Hockey League. Through 10 games, he has totaled five goals and six assists with a +10 rating. Galiardi’s 11 points place him in a tie for fifth on the WHL’s scoring charts and ranks first among rookies. In addition, he has three game-winning goals this season, including a third-period tally to lift the Calgary Hitmen over the Kamloops Blazers on Monday night.
