Rookie Camp Report: Day 3
Day three of the Colorado Avalanche’s 2007 Rookie Camp is set to begin, and it should be a good one. After a 7-3 Team Gray victory on Saturday, Team Black battled back to earn a 4-3 win on Sunday.
Trevor Cann gets the starting nod in goal for Team Gray, while Michael Wall will be between the pipes for Team Black.
The action has been crisp, fast and fluid during the first 10 minutes of the opening period, as the players seem to be well-adjusted to their new surroundings and teammates. However, Cann and Wall have been up to the test in goal, with each denying a barrage of shots.
With eight minutes remaining in the period, Chris Stewart put Team Gray up 1-0 on his fifth goal of camp off assists from former
Andrew Penner takes over in net for Team Gray to start period, while Wall remains in the Team Black goal.
Team Gray jumped out to a 3-1 within the first five minutes of the middle frame off goals from Brent Kelly and Brad Snetsinger, but Brandon Straub answered back for Team Black six minutes into the period to make it a one-goal game.
After a brief intermission at the 10:00 mark, T.J. Hensick evened the game for Team Black on a tip-in. But Team Gray would take a 4-3 lead into the final period on a Codey Burki tally. Burki dangled around two defenders on the play and slipped the puck into the back of the net while being dragged down.
Trevor Cann is back in the game to start the final stanza, this time in the Team Black net. Penner remains between the pipes for Team Gray.
The two teams proceeded to trade goals early in the first, with Stewart striking for Team Gray and David Jones answering back for Team Black.
At the midway point of the third period, Stewart completed his hat trick off a one-timer from Corbin to give Team Gray a 6-4 advantage and seemingly pull the momentum in their favor.
However, that’s when Cody McLeod took over the game. McLeod notched two goals in one shift – the first with eight minutes remaining and the second 40 seconds later on a tip of a Kevin Montgomery shot from the point – to give him a hat trick of his own and even the contest at 6-6. McLeod nearly recorded a third goal on the shift, but was denied by Penner.
With just under six minutes remaining in the game, Rob Drummond notched what proved to be the game-winning goal off a feed from Corbin.
Final Score: Team Gray 7, Team Black 6. Team Gray now holds a 2-1 advantage in the series.
