Avalanche Signs Gaunce
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Cameron Gaunce to an entry-level contract.

Gaunce, 19, was Colorado’s first selection (second round, 50th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.  He was named to the Ontario Hockey League’s Second All-Star Team in 2008-09 after recording 64 points (17g/47a) and 110 penalty minutes in 67 games for the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors.  Gaunce, who ranked fifth among all OHL defensemen in scoring, finished third in voting for the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league’s most outstanding defenseman.

“Cameron is a complete player,” said Avalanche Vice President of Hockey Operations Craig Billington.  “He’s a bit of a throw-back, a very assertive defenseman who brings size and competes.”

The Sudbury, Ontario native led the Majors in assists and plus/minus (+28) and was second in points.  He added 10 points (4g/6a) in 11 playoff contests.  The 6-foot-1, 203-pound blueliner was tabbed by league coaches as the Eastern Conference’s “Best Defensive Defenseman” and second-best “Offensive Defenseman.”  In 2007-08, Gaunce was named to the OHL’s All-Rookie Team with Mississauga.
