A record number of the Colorado Avalanche’s young players will be participating when the organization holds its annual player development camp this week.  Twenty nine prospects are expected for the week-long event at the team’s practice facility in Centennial, Colo., beginning July 9. The first day of on-ice drills will be Friday, July 11.

“This is a part of the organization’s commitment and efforts in developing our young players,” said Avalanche Director of Player Development Craig Billington. “Building our young players into potential NHL skaters requires attention to details not only on the ice, but also in their training programs, their mental approach and their relationships with each other as teammates.”

“We feel we’ve made tremendous strides over the last couple of seasons with respect to our organizational depth and the impact that some of our young players have already made at the NHL level.”

This year’s camp schedule will include an on-ice element together with off-ice physical training.  Camp participants will be comprised of four of the club’s 2008 draft picks, as well as system prospects and first-year Avalanche players David Jones and T.J. Hensick.

“Some of these players participated in this camp last summer,” added Billington. “This is a great opportunity to build on what we started and then continue that throughout the hockey season.  While it is a gradual process, we are convinced this will contribute to the goal of providing our fans with an exciting and competitive product on the ice.”

Players will be on the ice most mornings throughout the week and fans are encouraged to watch at no cost.
