The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that forward Paul Stastny will miss approximately two to three weeks after undergoing surgery this afternoon to remove his appendix.

“Paul experienced some pain in his abdominal area today,” said Avalanche Head Athletic Trainer Matthew Sokolowski. “Further examination by our medical staff following practice determined he needed the procedure. We expect him to fully recover in two to three weeks.”

Stastny will miss his first games in the NHL after having appeared in all 82 during his rookie campaign and 46 this season. His 49 points (17g/32a) this season led the Avalanche in scoring.

The Avalanche center will also miss the NHL All-Star Game in which he was selected to participate on January 27. His appearance would’ve marked the seventh time that a son has followed his father in NHL All-Star competition.

In other related news, the Avalanche recalled center T.J. Hensick from Lake Erie, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate.
