Avalanche Signs Ryan Smyth
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced late Sunday the signing of free agent left wing Ryan Smyth to a long-term contract.

“I’m thrilled to be able to announce the signing of Ryan Smyth,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. “Ryan is a proven, top-tier athlete in the NHL who will be an outstanding fit with our club’s continued philosophy and goal of providing our fans with a dynamic and exciting product. He’s a player that exemplifies grit, determination and courage and will be among the future leaders of this franchise.”

Smyth, 31, the sixth overall selection in the 1994 Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, is headed into his 13th NHL season. The 6-1, 190-pound native of Banff, Alberta compiled 36 goals and 68 points last season between Edmonton and the New York Islanders, two points shy of his career-high in a season.

“At 31, we feel he can continue to play at a high-level and make an impact in this league for years to come,” added Giguere. “With his vast experience as a leader both in the NHL and  international competition as a captain with Team Canada, we expect Ryan to be a positive example for our younger players.”

A veteran of 788 NHL contests and 73 post-season games, Smyth has scored 270 regular season goals and 23 in the post-season. He has recorded 20 or more goals on eight occasions, including 30 or more four times and 36 in each of his last two seasons.

As a member of Team Canada, Smyth competed in six World Championships (1999-2005), winning gold in 2003 and 2004; the World Cup of Hockey (2005) and two Olympics (2002, 2006) winning gold in 2002 at the Winter Games in Salt Lake City.  Smyth served as captain for Team Canada’s World Championship squads from 2001-2005.
