Avalanche Gearing Up For 2007 Entry Draft
The Colorado Avalanche will have four selections in the first two rounds of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft held this Friday and Saturday, June 22-23, in Columbus, Ohio. The first round of the 45th annual hockey draft will take place on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. MDT (first round will be televised on VERSUS). Rounds 2-7 will be held on Saturday starting at 8:00 a.m. MDT.

Colorado will have the 14th selection in the first round, the club’s highest draft slot since taking Vaclav Nedorost 14th overall in 2000. The Avalanche has three second-round picks: 45th overall, 49th (from Calgary) and 55th (from Anaheim, originally Atlanta's pick). The Avs will have one pick in the third round (91st) and also one selection in the fourth round (105th), fifth round (135th) and seventh round (195th). Colorado traded its sixth-round pick to San Jose in exchange for defenseman Michael Vernace on June 1, 2006.

“The success of the organization at the draft is extremely important in the salary-cap era,” said Avalanche Chief Scout Ted Hampson. “We are very excited about our position in this year’s draft and will look to continue adding depth to our system.”

The Avalanche is one of only five NHL teams with four selections in the first two rounds, along with Edmonton, St. Louis, Vancouver and Washington. In fact, this marks only the fourth time in franchise history that the Avalanche has had that many picks in the first two rounds. Colorado also had four picks in the opening two rounds of the 2005 and 2000 drafts and selected seven players in the first two rounds of the 1998 Entry Draft.
