NEW YORK (March 19, 2007) -- San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton, Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic and Dallas Stars center Mike Modano have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending March 18.

Each Monday, the NHL will recognize three players who delivered the League's top performances over the past week.

FIRST STAR -- JOE THORNTON, C, SAN JOSE SHARKS

Thornton led all NHL scorers for the week, posting 10 points (four goals, six assists) in four games as the Sharks gained seven of a possible eight points (3-0-1). He opened the week with one goal and two assists in a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks March 13 and recorded one goal and three assists in a 5-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes March 15. He tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets March 16 and finished the week a goal and an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche March 18. Thornton has moved up to third place in overall NHL scoring with 96 points (20 goals, 76 assists). His 76 assists tie him with Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the League lead in that category. The Sharks (44-25-4, 92 points) rank second in the Pacific Division.

SECOND STAR -- JOE SAKIC, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE

Sakic finished second in League scoring with nine points (three goals, six assists) in three games as the Avalanche (37-29-6, 80 points) moved within four points of eighth-place Calgary in the Western Conference playoff race. He opened the week with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over the Flames March 14, notched two goals and one assist in a 6-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes March 17 and recorded four assists in a 4-3 overtime win over the San Jose Sharks March 18. Sakic leads the Avalanche and ranks ninth in overall NHL scoring with 86 points (30 goals, 56 assists).

THIRD STAR -- MIKE MODANO, C, DALLAS STARS

Modano recorded six points (four goals, two assists), highlighted by a series of milestone tallies, as the Stars won three of four games. Modano became the 39th player in NHL history to score 500 goals when he tallied the game-winner in a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers March 13, notched one goal and one assist in a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames March 15 and became the all-time goal-scoring leader among U.S.-born players by scoring career goals 502 and 503 in a 3-2 loss at Nashville March 17. A native of Livonia, Michigan, Modano passed the mark of Hall of Fame forward Joe Mullen (New York, NY, 502). Modano finished the week with one assist in a 5-4 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes March 18.
