Paul Stastny Named NHL Rookie of the Month

NEW YORK (March 2, 2007) -- Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny, who led all rookies with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 14 games, has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for February.

Stastny edged Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (5-11--16 in 13 games), Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar (2-8--10 in 12 games), Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Alexandre Picard (1-10--11 in 13 games) and Pittsburgh Penguins center Jordan Staal (9-1--10 in 13 games) for the award.

Stastny recorded a 13-game point streak in February, the longest by an NHL rookie since 1992-93, when Winnipeg's Teemu Selanne finished his first season in the League with points in 17 consecutive games. Only two other rookies had point streaks of at least 13 games for the Quebec/Colorado franchise: Paul's father, Peter (16 games in 1980-81) and his uncle, Marian (13 games in 1981-82).

Stastny extended his point streak to 14 games last night with an assist in a 6-1 victory at Chicago. He ranks second among NHL rookies and third on the Avalanche in scoring with 60 points (22 goals, 38 assists) in 65 games.

The Quebec City native and NCAA All-American at the University of Denver is the fourth player to earn NHL Rookie of the Month honors this season, joining Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin (October, November), teammate Wojtek Wolski (December) and San Jose's Ryan Clowe (January). Stastny and Wolski are the first rookie teammates to each capture the monthly award since Atlanta's Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk in 2001-02.
