DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced Thursday that it has acquired the rights to junior defensive prospect Michael Vernace from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a conditional draft choice. The 20-year old has agreed to terms with the Avalanche on an entry-level contract.

The 6-2, 200-pound native of Toronto, Ontario was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 2004 Entry Draft and has played with the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League each of the past three seasons. A teammate of Avalanche forward Wojtek Wolski in Brampton, Vernace registered 10 goals and 62 assists in 68 games in 2005-06.

"He's a highly skilled defenseman with great vision and passing ability who will enhance our organizational depth on the blueline," said Avalanche Director of Player Development Craig Billington. "We were impressed with his development at this point in his career and we're looking forward to helping him continue that progression in our system."
