Avalanche Acquires Jose Theodore
DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche announced Wednesday that the club has acquired goaltender Jose Theodore from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for goaltender David Aebischer.

"Our entire hockey staff is very excited about the addition of Jose Theodore," said Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. "With this acquisition, we are convinced that we are securing our goaltending position for many years. He is a proven, all-star caliber netminder and at 29 he is entering the prime years of his career. Every year we are trying to reach the ultimate goal and this represents another sign to our fans that hasn't changed."

"In Jose Theodore, Peter Budaj and Vitaly Kolesnik we are very strong at the goaltending position now and for the future," added Lacroix.

Theodore captured the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 2001-02, leading the Canadiens to their first playoff berth in three seasons. He led the league with a .931 save percentage that year to become only the sixth goaltender in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy. In addition to his MVP honors, Theodore was named a Second Team All-Star and also won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender.

The Laval, Quebec native was Montreal's second selection (44th overall) in the 1994 Entry Draft and has spent his entire NHL career with the Canadiens. He has compiled a 141-158-30 lifetime record with 23 shutouts, a 2.62 GAA and .911 save pct.

Jose is coming off a 2003-04 season in which he set a career high with 33 wins and tied his career best with 67 appearances. He has played in two All-Star Games (‘02, ‘04) and is one of only six goaltenders in NHL history to score a goal in a regular season game, doing so on Jan. 2, 2001 at NY Islanders.

Theodore, 29, has played in 38 games for the Canadiens this season, posting a 17-15-5 record with a 3.46 goals-against average and .881 save percentage. He suffered a fracture of the right heel bone during the Olympic break on Feb. 16 and is expected to be fully recovered when the NHL playoffs begin.
