2006 OLYMPICS: Abby\'s Performance Highlights Day Two In Torino
David Aebischer turned aside 40 shots - including 20 in the second period - and carried Switzerland to one of its greatest hockey victories, a 3-2 win Thursday over the world champion Czechs.

"It's great for Swiss hockey that we won," said Aebischer, who stopped Jaromir Jagr six times in the second period. "We have to be careful because it's one game."

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mark Streit, who has only one NHL goal this season, gave the Swiss a 3-2 lead during a power play 6:42 into the third.

"I think it's by far the biggest win in Swiss hockey - since I've been playing. Even in history," Streit said. "It's kind of a miracle."

Aebischer, best known for replacing Patrick Roy as the Colorado Avalanche's top goalie, was brilliant while his team was short-handed for most of the final 7 minutes of the middle period. Switzerland was ahead 2-1 when the parade to the penalty box began.

The Swiss (1-1 in Group A), who had just two NHL players in their lineup, were whistled for six of the final eight penalties in the period and were down two men for about 2 minutes. Aebischer got tougher as flag-waving fans chanted his name.

In other action, captain Joe Sakic scored a goal to help Canada to a 5-1 win over Germany. Team Canada is off to a 2-0 start in the 2006 Winter Games.

John-Michael Liles recorded an assist for the second straight day to help the United States (1-0-1) to a 4-1 win over Kazakhstan. Team USA won despite 32 saves from Avalanche prospect Vitaly Kolesnik, who was solid in a losing effort.

Slovakia improved to 2-0 thanks to a 6-3 victory over Latvia. Karlis Skrastins had one assist for Latvia. Avs goalie Peter Budaj got the day off after his winning performance over Russia on Wednesday. Jan Lasak got the start on Thursday and made 25 saves.

Finland also improved to 2-0 with a 6-0 victory over host Italy, while Russia bounced back after a loss on Wednesday by defeating Sweden 5-0.
