Sakic, Avs Beat Oilers 3-2
Sakic snapped a tie midway through the third period to lead the Avalanche to their third straight win, a 3-2 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers.
After Ian Laperriere gave Colorado a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period goals, Edmonton answered in the second with tallies by defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and Michael Peca, who snapped a 15-game drought.
But after a turnover by blue-liner Igor Ulanov, Sakic fired a snap shot from the right faceoff dot that glanced off the left shoulder of rookie goaltender Mike Morrison and into the net at 11:23 for his 10th goal of the season and a 3-2 edge.
The tally was the 1,426th career point for Sakic, who moved ahead of Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier for 12th place on the all-time list. It also was the Colorado captain's 552nd goal, four shy of Johnny Bucyk for 19th all-time.
Antti Laaksonen collected two assists and David Aebischer made 29 saves for the Avalanche, who improved to 3-2-0 against the Oilers and jumped into a second-place tie with the Calgary Flames in the Northwest, one point behind the Vancouver Canucks.
The reigning NHL Defensive Player of the Week, Morrison stopped just 14 shots for Edmonton, who had won three straight.
