Curtis Leschyshyn Retires
DENVER, Colo. -Colorado Avalanche defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn announced Monday morning that he has decided to retire from the game of hockey as an active player.

Leschyshyn, 36, played 16 full seasons in the NHL, including his first eight-plus seasons with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche. He was Quebec's first selection (third overall) in the 1988 Entry Draft and went on to play in 522 career games with the franchise, a total that still ranks 12th all time. He was a member of the Avalanche's 1995-96 Stanley Cup championship team, as he participated in 77 regular season games and 17 playoff contests in helping Colorado to its first Stanley Cup. The veteran blueliner has gone on to play with Washington, Hartford, Carolina, Minnesota and Ottawa since leaving the Avs, scoring a combined total of 212 points (47 goals, 165 assists) in 1,033 career NHL games.

"After going through the entire training camp, I feel it is the appropriate time for me to make that decision," said Leschyshyn. "I'm proud of what I have accomplished as a hockey player and I was fortunate to be playing in the NHL for so many years. I am really happy to retire as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, the organization where I began my career and won a Stanley Cup in 1996."

"From our arrival here in Denver to today, Curtis has been a good friend of the organization," said Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. "He has been a class-act, we totally respect his decision and want to wish him the best of luck in the future."
